Was he dark academia-pilled? Had he read The Secret History at this point? And was it a big influence on The Governance of China?

You have to go back

Is Xi an academic? I know very little about him and chinese politics in general. Do major players in the Party tend to be well read in Marx, Lenin, Mao, other marxists (and other philosophers like Kant and Hegel)?

They only began actually reading Marx after the Cultural Revolution. But by that time they didn't treat him like a God, but as one thinker among many.

In the revolutionary period little at all was translated, and after they took power they were too busy dealing with famine and civil war to do much reading.

My gf is Chinese and they basically recruit CCP members in university, where you can do extra courses (kinda like a minor) to become member of the Party. Those courses consist of literature study of Marx, Lenin and Mao (and other Chinese Marxists), the study of China's political structure and of Chinese history post-Civil war. So yes, they are familiar with Marxist lit

That's disappointing. I imagined that in their meetings they would discuss practical matters with costant references to Marxist literature and German philosophy.

They care about Marxist theory, but have completely scrapped Marxist economics. It's far closer to Confucian scholar-bureaucrats than it is a bunch of wannabe rabbis quibbling about the precise definition of "dialectics". Namely, they've imported a ton of native Chinese philosophy into it. Internally, Xi paints himself as a Scholar-Bureaucrat. He owns many leatherbound fist-edition books that he consults frequently, and refers to all books by their full title and their authors by their full names, is a Confucian custom.

I’d call him a dork, but I do the same.

>What do you think the Russians talk about in their councils of state -- Karl Marx? They get out their linear programming charts, statistical decision theories, minimax solutions, and compute the price-cost probabilities of their transactions and investments, just like we do.

>We no longer live in a world of nations and ideologies, Mr. Beale. The world is a college of corporations, inexorably determined by the immutable bylaws of business. The world is a business, Mr. Beale. It has been since man crawled out of the slime.

Xi claims to read a lot. I believe he said it's a way of life for him, even though he is pressed for time. But in governance of China he's not presented as an academic. More like a dedicated, competent bureaucrat who gets practical things done that benefit the common man.
