>Despite the widespread modern belief that the Library of Alexandria was burned once and cataclysmically destroyed, the Library actually declined gradually over the course of several centuries. This decline began with the purging of intellectuals from Alexandria in 145 BC during the reign of Ptolemy VIII Physcon, which resulted in Aristarchus of Samothrace, the head librarian, resigning from his position and exiling himself to Cyprus. Many other scholars, including Dionysius Thrax and Apollodorus of Athens, fled to other cities, where they continued teaching and conducting scholarship. The Library, or part of its collection, was accidentally burned by Julius Caesar during his civil war in 48 BC, but it is unclear how much was actually destroyed and it seems to have either survived or been rebuilt shortly thereafter; the geographer Strabo mentions having visited the Mouseion in around 20 BC and the prodigious scholarly output of Didymus Chalcenterus in Alexandria from this period indicates that he had access to at least some of the Library's resources

Homeric fans would probably have loved the lost works of Longinus...
https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Lost_literary_work#Specific_titles

We lost Manetho's History of Egypt, the History of Babylonia, Sulla's Memoirs, Augustus' Epigrams, Aristotle's second volume of the Poetics (the book of Comedy), Callinicus' History of Alexandria, Claudius' account of Carthaginian History, A History of Greek Geometry, Cato's Maxims,

I wish we had the other work by Quintilian, but we're lucky that we have the other works. The other works by Suetonius sound quite entertaining.

> the entirety of New Comedy, and early Latin poetry
Aristophanes is certainly funny, but New Comedy is just a form of slave comedy and probably a degradation of what Aristotle would have articulated in the Poetics. It's hard to know however... many works of early Latin poetry may have been satire, but what can equal Juvenal for that?

It could be interesting to see Triphallus performed as a greek play though, definitely.

Dr. William Smith's Bible Dictionary, an American publication. 1959 Edition, A.J. Holman Company. I think the text is from the later 19th Century. It's often found in thrift stores for about $2.00, but get the hardcover not the paperback. I think there is an extended Three Volume edition as well? This edition is just a compilation but it's a great book!

The Egyptians have a story about it.

The Muslims arrived and conquered the land. They then talked to the Librarians and asked
"Do these books contain anything that goes against the Koran? For if it does we will burn it down."
And since they had no knowledge of it they went
"Well we do-"
And before they finished that sentence the conquerors replied
"It does not actually matter. It will be destroyed anyway."
