It's a hard language, and I am fairly confident in claiming that over 80% of native speakers don't have a good enough grasp on the language to read Hegel. You should give up.

Is it really? Sometimes the way people fret makes it seem that only Mandarin, English, French, Arabic, and Spanish have a future.

Seems correct if you take demographics and globalization into account. My guess is that within the next 2-3 generations, Germanic and Slavic languages are going to be as dead as Gaelic is now.

been struggling for a couple years so take this with a grain of salt.

i have used a book called German for Reading. I also bought the graded readers >>16911120 talks about. its called dino lernt deutsch. they're alright. if you can handle the first 10 series or so comfortably you can definitely claim A2 level proficiency. i would also recommend assimil german with ease

imo is a very tough language. it was quite a hurdle to grasp cases, but it's a whole other hurdle to remember all the declensions and so on.

been thinking about moving onto italian for a bit and giving german a break.

Buy a grammar book, do the exercises again and again, drill the vocab, read as much as possible.

80% of english native speakers dont have a good enough grasp of the language to read Shakespeare either, no? Now does that mean ESL never have a chance at understanding him?
