Immortality Inc. - Robert Sheckley (1959)

A man dies in 1958 and awakens to find himself alive in 2110. It's all lurching and stumbling downhill from there on though, both in terms of how his life progresses and of my enjoyment. The supernatural takes a leading role though it's presented as science. While there was some interesting social commentary, it wasn't nearly enough to give it a higher rating.
One of the central conceits is that the body and mind are separable, which is why there are zombies and ghosts. The other one is that there is a scientifically proven afterlife, but only one in a million naturally go there. Science has developed a method to all but assure one's afterlife, but it comes at a cost that only the wealthiest can afford. Thus Matthew 19:24 is inverted, "And again I say unto you, It is easier for a camel to go through the eye of a needle, than for a rich man to enter into the kingdom of God". For those wealthy who prefer earthly delights and dominion they can buy a new body to transfer into on either the open or black market. This society seems to have accepted this without resistance as suicide booths are commonplace.
The protagonist immediately meets his love interest who initially has no interest in him, but after he punches her in the face and knocks her out, she realizes what a real man he is and dedicates her life to him.
Ending spoiler: After doing everything possible to stay alive, he commits suicide because the plot requires it. His love interest does the same to be together in the afterlife with him.
Rating: 2/5

>> No.16868746

>>16868718
I don't think the writing is crap. I think Martin is old, lazy and doesn't care all that much. What does he have to work towards? He already has the success he needs to live as he pleases. He has armies of fans building hype year after year. No matter what he delivered, he'd disappoint, because a decade of hype cannot be contested with. So why bother? He's not going to finish ASOIAF. He doesn't need to. He already won. By leaving it unfinished, he'll leave behind a legacy of people wondering what could have been, rather than a legacy of fans waiting and being disappointed when the ending wasn't what they hoped for.

>> No.16868772

>>16868746
>By leaving it unfinished, he'll leave behind a legacy of people wondering what could have been, rather than a legacy of fans waiting and being disappointed when the ending wasn't what they hoped for.
That's what happens when your story consists of almost nothing but YOU'LL NEVER GUESS WHAT HAPPENS NEXT. A genuinely great story doesn't need some WHAT A TWEEST bullshit ending to impress readers. It seems GRRM has possibly reached this conclusion as well and instead of embarrassing himself further he's decided to not even bother writing an ending which is probably the best choice.

>> No.16868777

>>16868772
Now you're getting it. The "YOU'LL NEVER GUESS WHAT HAPPENS NEXT" stuff as you call it IS well crafter, otherwise this series wouldn't have lifted Martin out of obscurity. He did this thing very well, so well he no longer needs to give any payoff for all that buildup. Like I said, he already won.

In the same way that an unpredictable jump scare in a movie might be well crafted, but when it keeps happening with only slight variations it very, very quickly loses its charm. So no his story was not "well crafted;" the first few unpredictable instances were. But when it came time to actually buckle down and write a genuinely compelling story he couldn't do it thus why there will never be an ending. You're right about him winning; he doesn't NEED to finish it. He's rich and morons will kiss his ass for years to come though I wouldn't be surprised if somewhere down the road a serious reevaluation happens and readers in general will finally realize just how bad of a writer he was.

Gift Of The Manti - J.F. Bone, Roy Meyers (1977)

The Manti are an ancient race whose final enemy is boredom, as all else has been conquered. To alleviate boredom a mated pair travel throughout the galaxy inhabiting other intelligent species to live as they do and to experience all existence has to offer. Eventually they come across Earth and decide to save humanity from itself, or enable their self-destruction, it's all the same really. Humans have so much new and exciting stimuli to offer and they want it all. As a song from a couple years after the book was published said, "You've gotta be cruel to be kind, in the right measure" which is how the Manti justify what they do and the Humans feel likewise about their own actions to each other. Although it starts with the Manti, the vast majority of book takes place from the perspective of a few different humans as they try to cope with the changes wrought by the Manti.
Ending spoiler: A virus from China spreads worldwide and is projected to wipe out 90% of the Human population. The Manti realize there is nothing more for them to do with Earth, so they leave.
Rating: 4/5

At the time of this writing, this is the only legitimate rating and review of this book on Goodreads. The sole other rating is highly suspect. It's difficult to tell, but it's likely I enjoyed this more than it would be enjoyed by theoretical other readers. You may wonder how I came to read this. Some years ago I was reading an anthology of golden age sf and I read some of his stories and then I read one of his novels. I was looking at my to-read list today and I had them sorted by page count to choose a short read and I arbitrarily picked this one.

Write every day. Don't bother editing too much. Be verbose and write a neverending story - if you have an idea include it! Have slightly above average prose. Try to appeal to your demographic. Wishfulfillment for nerdy stuff, love triangles for slashfics, etc. Include references to other (popular) works, kind of like Big Bang Theory or Ready Player One. Big plus if you do something meaningful with it. Readers go crazy if you have some kind of magic system and world building to optimize for 'power gaming'. World-build a lot! Plot should never be your focus.

To make things worse he doesn't really have anybody he can confide in besides Syl, who is limited in how she can console him since not being human she doesn't fully understand everything he's going through. That said, Syl is pretty much the only reason Kaladin didn't commit suicide a long time ago, so even if she can't fully fix him she at least saved his life.

What do I mean by dead world? Take for example the First Men. They had bronze so they stomped on the Children of The Forest. That went on forever and a day until suddenly the Andals arrived (from Andalus) with Iron so they win. Why on earth didn't the first men figure out Iron over thousands of years? Everything in his books is only surface level and doesn't obey any internal logic.

That's not what people mean when they say it's well-crafted. The characters, their motivations, and their relationships are well-realized. They act in very believable and compelling ways, so that the plot feels like an organic extension of what these characters do and what they are trying to achieve. Furthermore, the plot is pretty free of contrivances, by which I mean you don't feel deliberately mislead or cheated when unexpected things happen, because these events also logically follow from what has already occurred.

Because of this, the only way to really anticipate where the story goes is by understanding the characters and their circumstances. Martin teased the readers with various prophecies, only to show that prophecies can fail and you can't use them as a road map for what will happen in the story. This doesn't stop some obnoxious fans of his from over-analyzing symbolism and other nonsense in the books, despite the overwhelming majority of the plot being determined by character motivations.

A liberal homosexual feminist Protestant was teaching a class on George R.R. Martin, known hack

”Before the class begins, you must get on your knees and worship Gurm and accept that Planetos is the greatest fantasy setting of all time even greater than Arda!”

At this moment, a brave, patriotic, British WW1 veteran who had served 1500 tours of duty on the Somme and understood the necessity of war and fully supported all decisions made by Butcher Haig stood up.

”What are the linguistic differences among the peoples of Westeros?”

The arrogant proddie smirked quite schismatically and smugly replied “There is the Old Tongue and the Common Tongue, you stupid warmonger”

”Wrong. There should be hundreds of dialects. If the Wall is 8000 years old as you say, how can the Wildlings and Northmen understand one another?”

The HBO shill was visibly shaken, and dropped his chalk and copy of A World of Ice and Fire. He stormed out of the room crying those redditor crocodile tears. The same tears redditors (who today live in such luxury most can afford sex changes) cried when Missandei was beheaded. There is no doubt that at this point our sola scriptura-faggot wished he had pulled himself up by his bootstraps and become more than a garbage pulp fiction fan. He wished so much he could die a glorious death in battle, but he had sworn to always be a draft dodger!

The students applauded and became Tolkien fans that day and accepted the Pope as their Lord and Master. A giant eagle named “Thorondor” flew into the room and perched atop the flag of Gondor and shed a tear on the White Tree. Beowulf was read in the original Old English several times, and Eru Ilúvatar himself showed up and enacted Aragorn's flat rate tax policy across the universe.

The Lutheran was fired the next day and sunset found him squatting in the grass, groaning. Every stool was looser than the one before, and smelled fouler. By the time the moon came up he was shitting brown water.

I find it difficult to continue Dune after hearing that the following 5 books are not as good as the first and that they were written only because they forced Herbert to write more just because of the success that Dune was having. Oinaral lunged toward him, resplendent before the horrid surge. He leapt into him, tackled him about the breast ... The youth glimpsed the Haul, bulbous black framed by ceilings stark with illumination. They sailed past the floor, and emptiness pulled them down and away.

There's a book I read at some point when I was young. I remember almost nothing of it except that I'm pretty sure it was sci-fi and it had some sort of silver winged creatures.
In the past whenever I tried to google to find it I got results relating to the shrike from Hyperion which isn't the one I'm thinking of (good book though).
For all I know it was a trash book, I remember essentially nothing else (I think it was in a desert or rocky setting?). I found it on an old shelf in the early 00s.

Would anyone have any idea what book it could be? The OP image reminded me of it.

A marriage of
>subpar plots, compared to the variance of his ideas in previous works
>far too much current-real-world political undertone
The only story that stuck out to me in the collection was a 3-parter because it had a nice double-layered twist involved
The weird thing is that one of Egan's previous stories involves a gay MC and, as a sideplot, it did a great job at exploring faggotry in the relationship (one example is that MC is a laid-back fag while his partner is a "I want to celebrate at every gay pride event"-type of flamboyant gay) so while you have MC trying to figure out the PLOT of the story, you have this side shit going on that goes far in detailing some normal possible concerns a fag might think.
Then Instantiation comes out and all this shit reads so tryhard and fake, like Egan has been transformed into a diamond dozen stereotypical agenda writer.
