The word socialism means many different things now. Sowell used to be a Marxist so he's probably talking about Marxist definition of socialism ie workers ownership of the means of production and a workers state. What gets shilled in the media is social liberalism and social democracy and then this is called socialism.

This fucking guy gets posted on here as some kind of ultra refutation of left wing economics and the only things I've seen from him are retarded neo-lib platitudes.

Look at Upper Volta/Burkina Faso prior to and during Sankara's time. Look at the Soviet Union moving from the backwater of Europe to a world superpower in 40 years. Look at the century of humiliation in China and where they ended up after Mao. Even the greatest period in American productive power, where they actually built shit, ran shit over the world, and provided an absurdly high quality of life to average people was when they had Bretton-Woods; no socialism, but a regulated capitalism similar to China post-Deng.

Friedman and his disciples are a fucking plague. Somehow their legacy in Chile, Argentina, Poland, Russia, Iraq, etc, are not ever marshalled as a criticism of what has become the dominant form of capitalism post 70s.
