I live in an amish community. I mean, it's primarily an english community, but there's tons of amish people around. For one, you can't just "become" Amish, you're either born into it or not. They don't let outsiders in.

However, they don't dislike outsiders, and it's very easy to make friends with, or socialize with Amish people, I have several friends and business acquaintances who are amish. They'll treat you just like anybody else. You can never "be" amish, is the only limitating...not that that necessarily means anything. I mean, I known regular people who've married amish people, and technically that means that amish spouse has to be excommunicated, but...like everything with the amish, there's the way it's supposed to be, and then there's the way it is, and in a lot of cases, nobody gives a shit.

Like many amish guys will own pickup trucks and cell phones (women too seem to own a lot of phones) and even though they're only supposed to use them for work related stuff, you see them driving the truck around town, sipping on a beer (they're not supposed to drink either) gabbing away to whoever.

If you want to be accepted by them, it's not hard. For one, BE POLITE. please and thank you with everything. Second, be kind. Third, be sociable. Fourth, and most important, spend money on them, they love money.

It's definitely a cult - system of arbitrary rules that are used to control members, and any perceived infraction can be used to punish, and eventually shun a member who doesn't fit in.
