How do I stop myself from ending up like him?

Don't wallow in your own misery, play the game as best you can and take solace in whatever makes you happy. But whatever you do, stay humble and be positive.

This book was mind of insane. The first part sounded like how I thought maybe a year before I read it. Reading older writings just makes me realize how we haven't changed that much. I mean, reading Candide is like reading contemporary comedy. And that is from Voltaire, a man that would evoke the feeling of watching paint dry to the average person.

The first part felt like a parody of my own inner monologue and when it got to the second part and he said he was 24 I had to put the book down

Read crime and punishment while I was couch surfing, living off of my uni tuition, getting hammered every single day and generally feeling like a worthless retard. Basically felt like I was reading my own life, but Ironically such a story felt super satisfying to get into.
I guess just don't get stuck in once place too long, and don't give up on the things that matter. His most miserable characters are all alcoholics who push everyone away and mentally dig themselves into a hole with derogatory inner monologues. If you keep finding new interests and working earnestly at the things that are important for you, you should be fine (i think, still trying this myself)

To quote from Taxi Driver, imo a loose adaptation of the book: "I do not believe one should devote his life to morbid self-attention, but should become a person like other people."

Can confirm from my experiences. Get out of your head, spend most of your day working hard on things you're passionate about. Resist over-introspection.
I used to spend an hour sometimes, legitimately pacing and thinking, occasionally checking my phone. I'd check the time and get shocked at how much time I let slip.
I started videography and photography again. Difficult but rewarding.

Take humble action to improve. Be grateful for the small things. Gratitude is a beautiful thing. Start with your diet, hygiene, and fitness. Ignore or remove from your life people who do not want you to improve and succeed.

The U-man did, and he wasn't happy anyway. He ruined a perfectly good shot at happiness for himself. Sex could lead to happiness, but it is not the solution, merely a possible step.
