Having read the unabridged version I can see what you mean but it’s still solid overall

The beginning is great, though there's a lot of drawn out 19th-century stuff with dukes and duchesses and blah blah in the latter 75% of the book. There's a hot lesbian piano teacher, though; she redeems the end of the book somewhat.

Reading this for the first time atm. I have to admit i'm struggling with the length but it's a fantastic read.

I just finished the chapter where Caderousse dies realising that the Abe is Edmound I'm interesting to read how it concludes, i have to admit the passage i just mentioned was extremely satisfying and a poetic way for that characters arc to conclude.

>Abridged
Don't read an abridged edition, it's not worth it when the original is already very easy and fun to read (and you can read the whole thing with illustrations for free here:https://www.gutenberg.org/files/1184/1184-h/1184-h.htm).). The abridged version reduced his prison experience to almost nothing so his misery and desire for revenge were minimized.

My favorite work of fiction. Definitely worth reading.

It's good. Some parts (maybe 100 pages) are slow and annoying and basically irrelevant to what the reader cares about.

Excuse me?
Am I reading the wrong version of this book?
I'm about 80% the way through and have met no such character.

I am so fucking angry right now.
I just checked my ebook version, and it's the fucking abridged version.
I've missed out on over half of this book, I almost don't want to finish it ever.

How many pages does your book hold? Mine (unabridged) has around 880.

>> No.16826066

>>16826010
According to Amazon, around 500, but when I compared the chapter numbers I was missing a good 2/3rd.

>> No.16826977

rookie error. bet you missed this bit where the guy gets stoned and fucks the statues.

>> No.16827891

>>16826977
Yep.
Completely fucked myself.
I just finished up reading the abridged version, and now that I know that I am reading an incomplete version, I can see a bunch of missing parts.
Cavalcanti being a murder somehow, and Danglars daughter leaving is completely absent.
Also, Danglars gets away with it. The one dude who deserved all the vengeance, and he appears to just walk free in the version I just read.

Fuck it.
It was a good enough read that I'll probably just the actual book for my shelf and give it a re-read in the future.
Still so disappointed it my mistake though.

Has anyone read the Three Musketeers? How do you compare it to this novel?

>> No.16829314

>>16829267
Monte Cristo is a better book, but the Three Musketeers is also a great adventure novel and a comfy book.
