how did you get to read as much as you do? reading would bring me great joy but i haven't finished writing a single essay or reading a single book this whole pandemic. how do you read more, or in other words how can you create good work habits and reading habits?

Just pick up something that you'll enjoy that is of manageable length and start reading. Keep reading until you've made some decent progress.
If you're not able to do that then (I usually refrain from saying this) you are not going to make it and you should find a different hobby.

You answered your own question, you have to get your depression under (some form of) control. Reading can help with that in some cases, but they have to be the right books. Try to find something you have always been deeply interested in but never got around to reading about. Even then you might have to coerce yourself a bit at times.

Replace toxic behaviours with reading. I absolutely did waste hours doomscrolling through coronavirus posts on Reddit, achieving nothing useful at all and stressing me out.
Same for Twitter or Instagram for other people.
When you want to scroll something, reach for a book instead.
Motivate yourself by recognizing that scrolling bullshit websites will make your mental health worse, but reading books should make your mood better.

As with this decision.. you're forcing it. Seems like this may be part of your depression as well. Learn to accept things for how they are. Dont judge them or yourself for your reaction to them.. and go from there. Try making decisions from only a place of strength, or from a mindset of being sure of something.

I enjoy reading more than I enjoy doing other things. Sometimes I find myself wondering "what could I do with this free time?" and my answer inevitably ends up being that I would spend it reading in some capacity. My advice to you would be to find something you enjoy, whether that is reading books or anything else. It makes life a lot more pleasant.

I started reading after dinner until I went to bed instead of watching the same few YT videos over and over

pick a book that seems interesting and set a timer for 30 minutes on ur phone. read until the alarm goes off, force yourself to stay focused. do this once a day and you'll be done with a book pretty quick. a bonus is that you'll likely want to continue reading for longer than 30 minutes. at least i always do so i end up doing another 30 minute timer. then i usually end up reading something on my phone right before bed until i fall asleep basically. so maybe like 1.5hrs a day of actual reading.

Currently reading How to read a Book. They postulate that's more about how you read than how much you read. So don't be too concerned about the volume of works you get through

To the question of actually getting into a reading habit, just set aside an hour or two at a certain time in your day. Personally i like to go to the library after work and read for an hour and a half then go home. Then i read an hour more in bed before i sleep. Works for me.

Just read 30 pages a day until you make reading a habit and begin to enjoy it
