The narratology is very unique. Getting inside the head of someone so disgusting and suave at the same time makes for a great conflict. It is a fun book to read between the lines.

For me it's the writing style. Humbert gets you into his mindset so well with how he uses language that you almost forget he's drugging and manipulating Lolita so he can fuck her. Whether there is real love or just lust is unclear. Whether she feels anything towards him or not is unclear. You can't trust shit because the entire book is written by the pedophile who is also an incredibly talented writer. You can't trust Humbert at all, but I found myself really wanting to at times.

This, finished it recently.
And the best thing about the book it's how it handles the main character and storytelling.
Like the other anon said, he's so charismatic to the point you forget he is abusing lolita, and in a lot of times, you root for him to succeed.
A genuine sociopath that you end up liking.

This, Nabokov was a highly intelligent synaesthete and his prose is clever. The story is also very funny, it has some decent action, and a cleverly foreshadowed plot twist.

A lot of posts clearly state that the language of the protagonist is seducing to the point of wanting to rationalize pedophilia. Not that it's an absolute success in that regard

Cuz daddy issues. I never found any part of this book even remotely sexy (I like MILFs). It's just the best writing in my opinion, and even if it was not, the psychological component is really awesome to analyze. I like other books, but I will always maintain that Lolita is my favorite novel and Humbert is my favorite character.
I read an Indonesian muslim dude's doctoral thesis in which he diagnoses Humbert through a Freudian lens. Worth reading.

Question for you guys:
>what do you make of the Annabel Lee thing? Was it a simple nod to Poe or was Humbert genuinely malformed by the loss of his young love? Considering Humbert is a sociopath, he is probably lying about it and using dark tragic literature to help contribute to his point, but he could very well have been born with the paraphilic deviation from normal sexuality.
Professor Sam Vaknin suggests that the cycle of abuse contributing to pedophilia (external stimuli influencing the brain) is NOT all it is made out to be. That is to say, it would appear that the archetypal profile of the Cunnychad is that of an inherent maladaptivity that occurs either prior to birth or as a result of brain formation idiosyncracies. We also know that Humbert is not an 'exclusive' creep.. "I was perfectly capable of intercourse with Eve, but it was Lilith I longed for."
