I kinda see sympathy like a loan of social credit. If in society we're constantly judging peoples worth and treating them accordingly, sympathy is like if we see someone who isn't worth much, but we want to give them a break and treat them as if they're better than they are we are said to be acting out of sympathy. Some guy isn't going to work and is sitting around and getting fat? What a lazy bum, get a job, go for a jog, no I won't buy you a beer. Oh there's a second guy acting the same only he also got his leg blown off by an old land mine 9 months ago while volunteering in some shit hole, that's tough dude, hey I'll get this round.

Sympathy is when you vomit because someone else vomited, a sympathetic spew as it were.
Empathy is being able to comprehend the situation of the vomiter, and to know that it is not the same situation as you.
