wait wait wait... are you actually saying that Funko Fops are lame? and are you actually saying that Harry Potter is... b-bad?

Oh, you do not understand what you have written. You do not understand what you claim to dislike. If there is one thing that is redeemable in this world, it is Funko Pops. Those little funny toys make me laugh and smile and giggle

every.
single.
time.

I dream of owning them all. They are so simple, yet they are so elegant and complex. Unlike most people on this board, I am not a virgin. Thanks to whom? A slut? no no no no... A man? no no no no no... Thanks to Funko Pops?... YES YES YES...I lost my virginity to the Funko Pop Dumbledore.

One eventful evening I was contemplating suicide because there was no sexual activity in my miserable life. I was reaching for the gun, but then I saw him - Funko Pop Dumbledore was looking at me with his huge horny black eyes. My pants fell and Dumbledore flew into my anus. It felt so great that I started to see colors again, I started to hear music in everything. It felt so very wonderful that I just pushed him deeper and deeper, and then... Dumbledore disappeared- I pushed him too far up my ass.

He is still there.

That is why I love Funko Pops and Harry Potter. Both of them are part of me.

those Barnes and Nobel leatherbound books are super fucking ugly, and I don't know why. Maybe its because they all look the same with all the bright colors and wacky fonts. This is why I don't like buying my books in the same edition or series, if you're going to buy physical books then they should all look nice and different on the shelf, not all the same.

There's this question that's been at the back of my mind for awhile: what's the difference between buying funko pops and collecting books? At the end of the day its all just CONSOOOM, isn't it. What's the difference between "OMG [RARE PRINTING OR EDITION] by [FAMOUS or RESPECTED AUTHOR] IM GONNA CONSOOOOOM" and "OMG [POPULAR CHARACTER] from [FRANCHISE] IM GONNA CONSOOOOOOM"

Most of the books are bought as furniture, not for actual reading. Too many garbage stuff there and I'm not talking about books, they're fine, mostly. Look it these things I bought! Look! Lookit em! Instead of discussing why I like em let's fetishize the products I consoooooooooooooooooooome

That's why. Now go take more pictures of shit you own to brag about online. You'll have plenty of company.
I mean you could buy a $5,000 rare hardback signed by the author and take lots of HD pictures to post online before putting it on a shelf to collect dust. But it won't get you any closer to the *meaning and message* of a book that a free EPUB from LIBGEN. It's fetishizing consumption. Which is the very definition of the consoomer.

>not a single spine is cracked
DONT YOU FREAKING RETARDS KNOW THAT:

ONE: It is impossible to "crack the spine" of a real well-made hardcover book. I don't know the proper terminology but basically the outer spine part pops out, and the paper spine folds up and there's a gap, while the covers fold along those indented fold bits. Just look at pic related. You can literally open and shut the book 180+ degrees continuously all day and it will leave absolutely zero recognizable trace whatsoever.

TWO: When you are reading a paperback, you aren't supposed to fold it open like a barbarian, you should "tilt" it open and peak inside. It's obviously a much worse experience than with a hardback you can open flat (which is why actual readers are willing to spend more for quality sewn-bound, hardback books). But it prevents creases in the spine, which will inevitably lead to pages falling out down the road when the glue brittles and you have pages on the edge of the crease not properly attached anymore.

>> No.16777662

>>16777562
I'm not talking about hardcovers, idiot.
>you should "tilt" it open and peak inside
What the fuck am I doing, watching my neighbor taking a shower? Fuck that and fuck you. How can you possibly be absorbing what you're reading if you're constantly aware of how your hands are positioned like you're in some kind of beginners course for smug assholes? You can hold it as nice as you please, but eventually, you're going to absently readjust your grip, flatten the pages, and bend further over the text. If you're reading a book, actually reading it, you're going to read it, and you're going to crack the spine.

It's one of the best novels Japanese literature produced to my knowledge.
The story itself is a fictionalised version of a Go-game between an old master who's the last of his line and an up and coming champion.
Basically all of this is a giant analogy for the battle of old and new that's been going on in Japan since the Meiji-era.

I love this book. Read it three times.
You should read it if you have the chance, since it's not very long. ~220 pages with a large typeset.

>When you are reading a paperback, you aren't supposed to fold it open like a barbarian, you should "tilt" it open and peak inside.
When you purchase cheap paperback with a glued, non sewn, spine,(also known as “Perfect” binding.
(or any book really),
You’re supposed to slowly “fold” the book
Out, so the pages and binding are “prestretched”, so the binding is unlikely to crack.
The way you do this, is by putting the book down on a hard flat surface like a desk or table, spine down,
Then you open the book by both the front and back covers, and stretch those down gentle do that they close to flat on the table,
Then you fold down a few more pages from both the front and back of the book simultaneously, like you did with the covers,
You continue doing this front and back a few pages at a time, till you reach the center of the book.
Do it gently with just basic finger and hand pressure.
Then let go of the book and close it up.
This relaxes the glue binding a bit, and causes all the pages to naturally fan out a bit.
It also helps prevent a single area from getting too stretched out.
It’s also nice yo do with sewn bindings, since those are additionally glued as well, but it’s not as necessary.

Reading tons of pdfs and epubs for post-grad really put me off reading anything besides articles and brief essays on a screen. Also, when you're working with screens most of the day, it's way nicer to read paper for leisure or personal interest.

Physical books are just simply lindy.

At a certain point the obsession with calling out materialism becomes a tiresome bore. Calling out funko pops is fine of course, because at their core they are nothing but celebrations of pop culture that boil down to pure 100% consoomerism.

But small reproductions of busts or statues? They're fine. They're still consumption, but at least there is something else that they represent besides purely vacuous consumer culture. If anon likes the aesthetics of them, or they remind him of a philosopher or classical artist, then they're fine. There is more to life than asceticism and minimalism. Nobody gives anybody shit for having a houseplant; I don't see how anon's statuary affectation is any worse than that.

Money has no value in designating consumption. You are a consumer, you consume information, but you also seem to love consuming the idea of getting things for free - which still takes up space in your harddrive, takes up space in your mind, in the collective consciousness, in the eyes of God, in the unfolding of history, it takes energy from something and dilutes it into something else,

Always nice to see that my office corner is appreciated, though you can't really see too much of my actual shelves from that picture. At some point I'll do pictures of my books again, though I am out of shelf space and the stacks of unshelved books continue to grow.

Not sure the reasoning behind this, or if it's directed towards the anon who posted the picture or the anon whose setup that is (i.e. me). If the latter, don't worry; I have sex with my wife regularly.

You're largely right here (consumption is consumption, regardless of whether money has changed hands), but I also think you're missing part of what the 'download it all for free!' anon said. He specified *conspicuous* consumption in his post. And he's not entirely wrong.

I am not going to stop buying physical books, as I do prefer them to ebooks (for a variety of reasons: aesthetic, functional, sentimental, et al; my home library is somewhere around 1,000 volumes so I am by no means looking down on anyone who buys books). But there can certainly be something uncomfortably performative about taking pictures of your shelves and posting them on shelf threads that suggests the conspicuous part of conspicuous consumption.

Despite that, I still participate on these threads a few times a year. I like to think that participation is more out of a desire to share than to show off (as I've found interesting works on other anons' shelves that I would otherwise be unaware of, I hope that others can find similar books on mine). But there's an uncomfortable tension there too, as on occasion I see others post my pictures too and I get small thrill from it, the same way that seeing a (you) shoots off a few pleasant endorphins in the lower parts of my brain. Ultimately when it comes down to it I'm not immune to things of which I'm critical.

In general I don't give it too much thought, but now and then it does give me pause.
