I don't think so. He's been holed up in a cabin attended by a small staff of women who feed and bathe him as he pretends to write.

Pretty much this. Pinecone died shortly after writing Vineland. Since then he is the cover for the leading AI research program of the CIA. Their goal is to make "him" write the perfect novel and win the Nobel Prize. When it will be announced they will come forward and announced that everything was fake. The place of literature, poetry and the importance of the artist will be reconsidered: if a machine can do better than us, why do it at all? How can we trust this was made by a human being? All these questions will deeply demoralise the artsy population and bring more power to the STEMfags. The art majors have been amongst the main concern of the CIA since the 60s because they have a huge superiority complex they act out with activism. Pinecone was never truly a writer, he was the lead operative of the project when it was launched in the early 60s (computers were only at their early development stage and they needed someone who could write at least a little bit and who was very discrete as not to rise suspicion - hence why they picked him).
Don DeLillo knows about it since the mid 90s when the Mossad tried to recruit him for a similar project because they thought he was Jewish (they thought they could wire his brain to a computer to make it learn faster but he refused and has been a under protection by the FBI since then). All his novels have more or less included clues to this since then, see the ending of Underwold for instance, it's pretty obvious there. Don't ask who I am, I learned all this by accident.
