Anything this ever did or touch has turned to shit. If I could go back and time travel and kill Mann, I would. The only word that describes one iota of his pathetic existence is worst.

My favorite is a tie between Buddenbrooks and The Magic Mountain.Death in Venice is good.JaHB is too Jewish for me.DF requires knowledge of music and is boring

>From wiki: "Delight over Eissi, who in his bath is terribly handsome. Find it very natural that I am in love with my son. Eissi lay reading in bed with his brown torso naked, which disconcerted me. I heard noise in the boys' room and surprised Eissi completely naked in front of Golo's bed acting foolish. Strong impression of his premasculine, gleaming body.

What's the deal with Joseph, anyway? His other major works are all about the decline of Germany/Europe, so what made him decide to sacrifice almost two decades to write a doorstopper about a biblical story?

JAHB > Buddenbrooks > Magic Mountain > Doctor Faustus
>disclaimer
I literally know nothing about music so my judgment on Faustus isn't in any way fair. It just seems to me that without some kind of education in music or musical theory, too much of it just goes over the head.

Why do you rate JaHB so highly?

JAHB achieved for the generations of Jacob and Joseph what Paradise Lost achieved for the story of the Garden of Eden and the fall of man. The only difference is that one is a novel and the other is a poem. Regardless, it brings to the table incredible characterization, motivation, and frankly the most important to me and what was so remarkable about PL, the quality of dialogue in-between the major events that we remember from the stories and effectively segues those scenes in a way that feels completely human and authentic. You live with the characters, you don't just get told of their works or achievements in relative paraphrase. My favorite moments are when Jacob is lamenting his loss of Joseph to Eliezer, soiling himself and nearly profaning out of grief and desperation to have him back, and also Joseph's dream interpretation of the Pharaoh's dream after he is called from prison for the purpose. The conversations have beautiful and logical flow, it never feels hamfisted or forced in order to get to the point of addressing the crux of the issue. Given that we should already know what the resolutions to the various climaxes are, the real story play is the journey to get to those spots organically, and Thomas Mann imagines the scenes masterfully.

It also does a little bit of imagery/theme recall in the vein of Homer and Virgil which is a small touch but I loved it. It's almost as if to say, we may walk different paths but our lives are not actually so different. As Aeneas reached out to embrace the shade of his father, and Achilles reached out to embrace the shade of Patroclus, Jacob and Joseph each share a number of parallels with each other in their own lives, and it's just beautiful. Absolutely beautiful.
