What books do I need to read in order to form an informed and impartial (at least as much as possible) on the Spanish Civil War?

"A people betrayed" by Paul Preston was published recently. It covers the period from the bourbon restoration of 1874 to the present day. I haven't read it yet, but I've only heard good things. Might not get into the nitty gritty military details of the war, but that doesn't really matter. It covers its causes and consequences.

I don't know very much about non-fiction about the war, but I do know Spaniards were obssesed and wrote literature about nothing else til recently. You could read Soldados de salamina and get a somewhay impartial look on the war through it. There's also Requiem for a Spanish Peasant which is an allegory of the war, but one which is very critical of the nationalists. Nevertheless it's still a great book and it should interest you.

I haven't read this one but I've heard good things: Revolution and the civil war in Spain by Pierre Broué and Emile Témime.

Don't be blind to the evidence. Every major historian of the war puts the number at around 50,000. Number of clergy killed numbers in the thousands. This is not to minimize the atrocities committed by the Nationalists, but to understand the brutality of the violence in the conflict, especially outside the conventional battlefield.
