You can't deprive yourself of "dopamine" so to speak. It's a misnomer. Of course, taking break from stimulating activities is good every now and then, but quitting pleasurable activities cold turkey isn't really healthy.
Also, this isn't really recent, but this dopamine fasting thing is a huge misnomer, there are articles about it from back when it was first invented, I think.

It's not recent, it's well known that dopamine isn't linked to pleasure but to motivation and reward. Heavy addicts do not even feel an inch of pleasure when the usage becomes too regular and lasts too long. It"s just tension relief.
Dopamine was supposed to motivate you to search for necessary supplies like food and sex. Drugs can hijack this system by giving you something that resembles dopamine, or in the case of porn of sugar, direct dopaminergic satisfaction as they are distorted versions of the necessary behaviours, which gives them very strong "motivational salience", as much as necessary behaviours.
With the years however, the addiction spirals form the dopaminergic "reward" system to the close and related "habit system", for which motivational salience and pleasure from intake aren't even necessary anymore, you just engage in the addictive behaviour whether you like it or not.

Sex addition is the same as porn addiction.
Videogames aren't really "addictive", unless they involve some sort of gambling or insidious rewerd system like some mobile games.
Young adolescents who spend a lot of time on vidya do so by lack of alternatives, and because they genuinely enjoy the activity. The result is similar, but it can't be called an addiction, as if they develop a passion for something else, these men could gradually give up vidya for exemple. This can't happen with an actual addiction.

But I'm kind of used to this kind of argument by liberals when they defend promiscuity.
"When religion dominated, we thought promiscuity was wrong. But now with science, we know it isn't".

And then you wonder, which science? And the answers tend to be something about religion being wrong and that you need to look for science for all answers in life.

Have you actually read even a single one of those studies? The conclusions the author draws from them aren't valid since most of them were done on people with established porn addiction (e.g the paper on escalation of porn use is only for a small minority of the population not for people in general, likewise all the erectile disfunction stuff occurs only in a small minority). In other words, a lot of it is reverse causative.

The actual modern neuroscientific consensus on porn use is as follows:
1. It's often a coping mechanism for some underlying issue (e.g depression, anxiety, stress etc.)
2. Exposure at a young age (pre-pubescent to pubescent) *is* harmful
3. Porn addicts are usually conflated with sex addicts in these kinds of studies and whether actual porn addicts even exist is still not clear. They aren't even (officially) classified as behavioral addictions yet (like compulsive gambling) though many studies are trying to make the case for it by examining it from that angle.

It is true that porn, like video games or imageboard browsing, is generally a waste of time and should be minimized or replaced with healthier alternatives, but whether it's addictive to the general population is unclear. Mainstream social media apps are far more addictive, as they were specifically designed to change people's behavior.

If you think you're addicted to porn, you either have an addictive personality to begin with or you're using porn to cope with something.

>>16595000
Not lit, but take a look at the documentary "The Social Dilemma" that came out earlier this year. That's it in a nutshell, the issue in the fact that the core of the habituation is rooted in perceptions vital to healthy socialization and sexuality. Further, cycles of addictive behavior reinforce the generalized pursuit of dopamine via other addictive activities. Drug-addicts for instance rarely engage in only a single addictive activity/substance but in more and more as previous ones become habituated. There is some evidence that early porn addiction conditions children for a life-time of addictive behavior.

I'd compare it to smoking weed - no one gets addicted to weed in the same way one gets addicted to alcohol, gambling, or hard drugs, but one can develop a very harmful habit that becomes hard to break. In the same way that weed makes people lazy if used in copius quantities during adolesence, porn consumption in adolescence leads people to generally have weird ideas or anxieties about sex and relationships. If used to cope with anxiety I wouldn't be surprised if it end up creating more anxiety about sex - conditioning beyond the zero, if you will.

I don't think the answer is a porn ban or a public health campaign aimed at lowering porn consumption. If people weren't lonely and anxious they probably wouldn't look at porn, so we need to make people less lonely and anxious which can only be done by having meaningful relationships and being yourself.

If stopping with Marijuana is easier because you can just stop going to buy it or grow it, for porn is hard: when your dick is hard, you're single and maybe you're using your phone in your room alone, well it's so damn hard it's like you have weed under your nose and you're saying "No i'm not gonna smoke this"

No biology is mentioned, but that isn't a surprise given how retardedly divided and isolated science fields are. Strictly speaking in just neuroscientific subjects, the uncertainty and inconclusiveness surrounding these studies is reasonable. Taken with a view of biological consequences, they take on an entirely different light. When someone begins to use heroin, for example, it's the equivalent of someone taking the endorphin system and ramming a slushee cup's worth of dopamine through it over the course of 6-12 hours. The withdrawal from that is horrible, as the body tries to rebuild the chemical homeostasis of itself while feeling drained, in pain and exhausted due to the new perceived "normal" level of dopamine that's no longer being met. You don't need a degree to figure out that has horrible consequences on a person's mental state and normal brain chemistry. If we shift to porn use, it seems much milder in comparison until you realize that it isn't just dopamine being released when jerking off to the favorite fetish of choice, the viewer is also _expelling_ chemicals that are extremely valuable biomatter. Just the dopamine release can be worked around; an exercise of routine and habit-rebuilding and reward normalizing can stop and start most behaviors. It becomes much more difficult when the body doesn't have the resources needed to change behaviors. The biomatter found in sperm and semenal fluid is very costly for an organism to produce, and is understandably so: it's biomatter meant for the very costly act of reproduction, and reserved for occasional use. Vitamin C, calcium, chlorine, citric acid, fructose, lactic acid, magnesium, nitrogen, phosphorus, potassium, sodium, vitamin B12, and zinc are all found in sperm along with valuable proteins that are very nutritionally dense. It's difficult to get these minerals naturally if you aren't well-fed, and the body starves and suffers when it's denied this nutrition either through starvation or the constant expelling of these nutrients with no replenishing. When people talk about porn being bad, they usually mean that porn's effects are bad for you (unrealistic expectations, addictive time wasting, etc.), but the real trouble is from repeated masturbation. All of the drawbacks from sex and none of the benefits are felt by chronic masturbators. The mental state of loneliness from a lack of a partner is compounded with the energy drain of preparing and expelling valuable semen, and no time for rest or any replenishing of these nutrients is given. It is in no way healthy to slave yourself to masturbation and porn. Hiding behind fancy inconclusive neuroscientific studies won't change what a basic understanding of biology, resources and human nature will tell you to be true, anon. Stop jerking off to anime girls and fetishes. Spend your time bettering yourself or being able to read without brain fog making things hazy.

I don't have any books to recommend to you, but I do have some advice. I used to jerk off most days because I had no gf and it was an easy way to stop anxiety and depressive feelings. Then I got tired of NEETdom and decided in my gut that I wanted something different, something other than being a university drop-out and occasional wagie. I spent about 3/4 of this year building up a travel van mostly on my own, and I came to understand just how much jerking off impeded me. On days I didn't wake up and coom I could think a few hours into the future and make progress on the build. On days I fapped it was a wash and I felt doubly awful from general depression and a feeling of failing myself by not working towards my goal. Through the patience of loving parents (lucky for me) and my own determination I finished it and have been on the road ever since, studying my interests and hobbies and living the Dao, or living in a way appropriate to me. I still have the urge to masturbate, and I've fapped multiple times. It's lessened though. It isn't every day. The span between lapses in willpower is getting wider and wider and the time I spend looking at anime tiddies is getting lesser and lesser. This is exactly what I want, because you can't truly quit porn. To do that would be to swear off sexuality as a whole, and deny part of the nature that makes up you as a human. So instead you have to work with your sexual impulses, not be lazy and dump the responsibility onto porn. Use the energy it gives you for your hobbies and interests and assignments. Convert it into something useful. If you really, really want to, get a girlfriend you can fuck. You can do it with just a bit of learning up on how to run women in a positive way. Look up Patrice O'Neil for getting an unofficial masterclass on the mind and behaviors of women. If you don't want to put up with the other half of the species, then go the Tesla and Newton route. Take your electric and burning desire to fuck and turn it into the creative lust that these men possessed. Read, study, exercise, build, create, do SOMETHING with that time and energy and you will out-do your best expectations with what you can accomplish. And, here's the important result of it: it won't remove the temptation. Instead, it will make the choice of not giving in more appealing than giving in. And that is what you need, not what you want. If you want it in your gut for this state of affairs to change, then YOU have to change it and start exercising that will power. There is no other way but you deciding that you truly want to change. If you want it half-heartedly, if you're milquetoast about it, if it's something you'd only go after if it wasn't too much of a burden on you, you will stay this way until you're 60 and your flaccid wrinkly cock is limp till the rest of your days. But if you do want to change, then man up and take that task by the head. Take responsibility. Take on that suffering and become better for it.

It takes an exercise of willpower on your part to consciously do something else instead of fapping. Read up on the mental transmutation techniques of Hermeticism if you want to delve deep into it, otherwise just make the decision yourself instead of giving in to the impulse to coom.

>because you can't truly quit porn. To do that would be to swear off sexuality as a whole, and deny part of the nature that makes up you as a human.

I think when sexual desire, whipped up by pornographic imagery, is deeply concentrated into intense mental fantasies, with those fantasies in turn tied to masturbation and ejaculation, it fucks you up. It fucks up something in your mind. That's not how human sexuality is meant to work -- a thing that exists solely in the mind, whipped and ridden by a one-handed rider.

In short, quitting porn is not swearing off sexuality as a whole.

The body is constantly producing sperm and the "cost" of ejaculation is negligible compared to the body's biomass. "Well-fed" is also a ridiculous overstatement. The amount you need to consume to replenish lost biomatter from multiple ejaculations is about a single hamburger or a glass of milk. Any minerals that are lost can be made up (and then some) with a single multivitamin. The only real issue might be zinc or selenium but eating the aforesaid hamburger (with seasame seeds on the bun) is enough to replenish that. From an evolutionary perspective it also doesn't make any sense to select for "costly" reproduction. Indeed in human reproduction almost all of the cost is born by the mother. A man loses more energy from walking around the block than he would from ejaculating.

As for brain fog and associated symptoms, these are almost certainly a result of sleep deprivation caused by people messing up their circadian rhythm through nighttime computer use -- i.e when people tend to watch porn. Try going to sleep at a regular time every night and watch all those problems vanish. Porn is a waste of time and a general detriment to society but "loss of vital nutrients" and "semen retention" is utter pseudoscience.

Unironically train yourself like a dog to overwrite a bad habit.
If the first thing you do is sit down at the computer is open up a porn tab (or something nonproductive and distracting), catch yourself there at the cue because that habitual cue is setting off an already programmed set of actions. If it's feasible, the computer would be the designated work area where you only do productive things, and you can use a tablet in another corner of the room as the leisure area to browse 4chan or youtube with.

Pinch yourself if you manage to catch yourself falling into a bad cue. Reward yourself immediately with a bite of a food you like (like a small piece of candy) when you close that porn tab or successfully complete a productive action.

A change in environment probably had an effect on whatever underlying issues you had, but when you went back home the environment acted as a cue for them again (including the habit of using porn to deal with those issues). That plus you were probably going to sleep at the same time every day during your camping trip and thus experienced no "withdrawal", i.e sleep deprivation. I myself have experienced the exact same thing you're talking about which is what led me to conclude that porn/masturbation is not the real problem.

>"Well-fed" is also a ridiculous overstatement.
It isn't when you think about the average diet of the American NEET. Fast food, instant noodles and snack foods are NOT proper nutrition. In addition, how many NEET's actually shell out money for multivitamins and proper foods? I can guarantee you that most absolute shut-ins, otakus, weebs and NEET's don't have proper nutrition on their minds. Maybe if there was a public health message about food and nutrition published in manga form they'd change overnight. One can dream.
>From an evolutionary perspective it also doesn't make any sense to select for "costly" reproduction.
From an evolutionary perspective it doesn't make sense to select for neo-natal features and different colored irises. Your statement doesn't address the base ideas behind bio-evolutionary thought either. Men aren't meant to ejaculate 24/7 like chimps do, and you can tell by testicle size. Large testicles indicate a larger capacity for sperm production, which chimps need due the polygamous nature of their mating habits. One alpha male chimp has access to every female chimp, and he tries to mate with as many as he can to spread his genes. If another male chimp takes over and becomes the new alpha, he tries to out-fuck his old competition and will succeed if he can successfully spread more of his sperm than the old alpha. Male humans function closer to a serial monogamy mating habit, which means one partner is selected after a length of time and is stayed with for a long period, sometimes for life. Once a selection is made, a man only has to produce enough sperm to impregnate one partner out of several other potential partners. Consequently, the libido of a man is lesser than that of a chimp's and his sperm is more limited. Straining the body to ejaculate constantly beyond the natural level of libido is unhealthy and disrupts hormone balances greatly. Every time you ejaculate the piece of brain circuitry responsible for your sex drive and testosterone levels is alerted and activated as it believes that you have just successfully mated, thus lowering your drive to compete and do young male things. The stage of life where competition for mates is over, in the mind of your body, and so hormones are released that makes a man more suitable for fatherhood than trying to fuck around as much as possible.
>A man loses more energy from walking around the block than he would from ejaculating.
Try going for a run before you coom. Try to go for a run the next day immediately after cooming. It will occur to you that maybe your statement doesn't hold up to basic reasoning like, "If my body thinks I've just successfully mated, a tiring and draining activity, maybe I won't have as much energy as I usually do."
>Try going to sleep at a regular time every night and watch all those problems vanish.
Test your notion tomorrow. Go to bed tonight no later than 10 PM, wake up at 6 AM. Jerk off 3 times in a row. See what happens.
