caring about "big wastes of time" is industrious signaling. i appreciate it as an affect vs alternatives (laziness, etc) but have no idea why people brag about things like not reading books

That's just a big cope.

I'm too self-conscious to read in public. I read alone and keep most of what I learn or think to myself, save for the occasional moment where I feel comfortable enough to speak, and I open my mouth and convey my ideas with oratory prowess that makes Joe Biden look like Cicero.

Agree. Another important thing is reading a book vs. actually understanding that book. I remember not so long ago in a thread some pseud posting a stack of books he read in a month and some Anon questioned him on the content of the books and he didn't know. In fact he was taken aback by his question. Also, having spoken to a lot of people on the topic of religion (mainly) and philosophy who claim to have read x or y book but have little to no understanding of it. Some people are just able to torture themselves for hours on end until they have read some book. It takes a lot of work to appreciate a good book. You have to understand the background, you should acquire a good commentary on it, perhaps even find a teacher, and be ready to re-read it a few times. This was the view of Schopenhauer (a true genius - destroyer of psueds) who held the position that it is better to have read a small number of books but ones that are rich and insightful, and to have a complete comprehension of them and to memorise key portions of it.

Frankly, reading for most people is a waste of time because most people aren't going to go through the steps I mentioned above. Here I mean reading philosophy, serious literature and even history. I don't mean reading pulp fiction which I think is better then rotting your brain on 4chan, Twitter or other forms of social media. A lot of people here cope by reading and have superficial discussions on BS peddlers like Hegel because they are friendless, have no gf and work a dead end job. They would be better off improving their life then reading 18th century German Idealism and ultimately procrastinating.

talking about signalling is autism signalling; you're telling people that you're so detached and rational that you're basically a harmless robot person
