Must be a fucking surreal experience living in one of those edge houses, front windows facing onto a suburban street, back windows out into the literal desert

They are not entirely humans, they are not fully aware of what goes on around and inside them.

Well, depends on you, there will be a natural point where you feel like you've had enough and it's different for everyone. For me, it was at the beginning of the one that comes after God Emperor.

God Emperor is the best, so I'd rec at least getting to that book. Messiah is a little slow but picks up near the end, Children gets batshiy weird but God Emperor just goes full on crazy shit.

Read them all, the first book can't be properly understood without the sequels.

Depends. I liked the first Dune, as I can see why it's a classic. But the second book lost me a little bit with too much, I don't know, esoteric shit, that felt like filler? The things both Paul and Chani talk about were too abstract for me to be interested in, but the ending salvaged it to maybe make me want to continue.

For me personally, I like Heinlein more because he mixes the right amounts of universe mechanics, plot, and some philosophy.
