Who are you to deem it arbitrary? I think it's a very good way to describe politics. If someone is on the far right, I instantly know that I will agree with them on many topics. If someone is on the far left, I instantly know that I will disagree with them on many topics. The only exception to this, perhaps, are anarcho-capitalists. Libertarians will identify as left or right leaning libertarians depending on their values.

People that reject the left/right dichotomy are retarded tryhards who don't understand politics and think reflecting the hatred of the American Democrat/Republican party system onto the greater left/right political dichotomy will make them seem smart. If you can't find the strong similarities between people on the "left" and between people on the "right" you aren't intelligent enough to be talking about whether or not it's a worthwhile colloquialism.
