Of course, the problem with the novel is that not only does it change lives but of course embedded in the text itself is a scathing critique of the very idea of having your life changed by a book. It puts the reader in a bit of a double bind, which of course double binds is one of the central themes of the novel. As the reader goes back and forth between submitting to being changed and cackling at the very idea of being changed, the reader's mind begins to mimic a tennis game. This, of course, was Wallace's intention, and it's reflected in forcing the reader to go "back and forth" between the main text and the endnotes (not footnotes) which serve as the embodiment of the "dissenting voice" within ourselves, the voice of doubt. Is there a way to resolve the dilemma? James O. Incandenza didn't think so. That's why the films he made were "anti-confluential," didn't resolve, and why the Jest itself is Infinite.

As Wallace said, it is a book that is MEANT to be read more than once. He said this in conversation with Michael Silverblatt on his show "Bookworm" in 1996. I think you'll find that a second reading will be a very enriching experience. As Silverblatt said, reading Infinite Jest over and over is like "getting to know someone well." Indeed, the text is deeper and rewards scrutiny better than any book ever written. There's a reason Wallace never finished The Pale King. With Infinite Jest, he dismantled the novel. It was finished. We didn't have to write novels anymore. And indeed, we don't have to read any others. The Pale King, of course, isn't a novel but a parody of posthumous novels.
