Hey /lit/, I’ve been working on a magic system that has crystals, particularly the various kinds of Quartz, as a major aspect, but I’m a bit stuck. I’ve more or less nailed down how a mage would utilize the crystals to do magic, but what kind of crystal/Quartz should be associated with what kind of magic is giving me grief, especially since I want there to be at least some connections to the traits of the crystals and/or the associations that they have in gemology, instead of just going off of their colors, which is a bit overdone, in my opinion, and I want to put my own twist on things. Not to mention that I want more than elemental magic in my system, which are harder to assign colors to than elemental magic. Unfortunately, whenever I try to come up with anything, I keep thinking of a certain TV show, the sources that I’ve found outside it are often contradictory, and I would prefer to be more original than just copying from Steven Universe, does anyone have any ideas and/or good sources of information on the crystals, particularly the associations that each have, please?

What about how crystals play a part in your magic systems if they do, it might give me some ideas, please.

Bloat. Authors adding too many point of view characters, too many subplots, padding books out to 1000 pages, writing sequels to stories that don't need them, etc. You see it even with simple things like Sanderson giving each chapter a name, a pretty picture, and a quote. The genre has become obsessed with the idea that "more is better".

You see, the thing about Tamsyn Muir is that it seems that she actually knows how to write and has promise. If if she actually practices enough she could take her place in the classic author hall of fame. Unlike whatever the actual fuck Arkady Martine bland, decent and uninspired drivel was supposed to be. So many authors like Ann Leckie, NK Jemisin, Yoon Ha Lee, Naomi Novik etc - I read them because I care about what will happen to the characters, but the actual plot or the prose or the worldbuilding? That just isn't up to snuff and shouldn't be anywhere near the Hugo awards, in my opinion. Not that some of the historical nominees (and some of the awards I've tried) were even that good, to be polite.

If I had to point to one thing I would say it's the sudden appeal to the wookiepedia style fanboy. The person who trowels through wikis like a troglodyte, pouring over every nuance and piece of information they can to have it in an itemized list they can use to flaunt how much they know to other losers. Sanderson for instance, he does nothing interesting on a character or world level, it's all his in depth magic systems that brings him fame. To me when I read fantasy I crave mystery and adventure, having long blocks of text on every page dedicated to explaining utterly everything does the exact opposite. But it makes those aforementioned troglodytes very happy.

It depends on how much of the Cosmere thing he finishes. If he manages to finish or come remotely close to finishing his like 40 book planned epic, then yeah he'll be regarded as one of the best for decades to come. He'll be the golden standard of "modern" fantasy, or whatever they end up calling it 50 years from now.

However, that is only assuming he actually finishes or near finishes what he's god planned. As is he's already a decade behind schedule and he's only written like 25% of what he planned.

He's still got 2 more eras of Mistborn (6-8 books), finishing this era and doing the second in the SA books (6+), and the 2 sequels to Elantris/Warbreaker (4), on top of shit that he hasn't even started like the Dragonsteel series about Hoid, and the other 2 unnamed series he planned on the other planets. He's still literally 25+ books away from being done.

Even for a guy that writes as fast as he does that's still a solid 20 years of writing ahead of us, and that's assuming he doesn't really take any time off to do his side books (which is already happening) or working on screenplays for movie/tv adaptions (which is already happening).

He's said it before in his lectures; he treats it like a job as opposed to most other writers who treat it like a hobby they focus on.
What that means is he's essentially in his 'office' or whatever at 9am till 5pm monday through friday writing.
Most authors that shit out a ton of books like him or King or Koontz are the ones that treat it fully like a job.
The ones that only come out with a book every few years but they're all really great books are the ones that treat it more like a hobby and write 'when the inspiration comes'.

A generation of writers who grew up on video games who think systems are the ends rather than the means. Things like Dungeons and Dragons used systems because they had no other way to translate magic into a gameplay formula, not because the system itself was the desired outcome.
Then there's writers who write nothing but fucking LitRPGs where EVERYTHING is a literal video game system.
You can even see the effect of this in books which aren't video game shit that don't focus on magic systems, in writers getting sidetracked into elaborate and highly descriptive action scenes which go on way too long and aren't remotely interesting, because they're designed to show off the character's prowess within the system of combat the story has set up.
Making everything a system just makes everything awful.

Fact is the publishers went to shit, largely because of the identity politics of old hags and fags, a fairly well known fact that gets mentioned in this thread every so often. (not that the publishers like TOR tend to hide it, they used to semi-publicly bully Baen's owners because of their libertarian views)
Even the nu-western writers admit as much even though they think it's a good thing, Sanderson will tell you to throw in token heroines and fags in your stories and cater them to your agent or it "doesn't deserve to get published" while he's pushing out YA trash like it's going out of style and throwing in out-of-tone anime bullshit when he feels like it. (not that self-publishing has done much for the western releases either)
Now step into traffic and get isekaied you offsite tourist.
>>16458880
Of nu-western fantasy?
No. As I said, it's gone to shit.
Of the old stuff I can recommend a huge chunk of pulps (CAS, Brackett, Leiber, Eddisson, Anderson, Pratt, Machen, Burroughs, Vance, Bellairs, Lanier, Zelazny, Fox etc etc) and most stuff is readable up until the "EPIC" tale of a minimum of five books starts to set in somewhere during the late 90s/early 2000s but you could still get past that until it combined with the nu-YA crowd writers to create the market we have now where nothing of interest gets published and the closest you get to non-YA is some trite crime story with a thin fantasy dressing.
As for chink stuff, depends entirely on tastes. Lord of the Mysteries is a good western-inspired one that recently got finished. Death Sutra and The Human Emperor are managing to hold my interest so far even though the latter has a mediocre start. For straight-up Xianxia there's Fang Xiang.

Yeah, I had the same reaction too. Read the first Mistborn and it was so dull to read through, although the plot being mostly predictable didn't help much either.

Tried to read WoK and the first chapter was decent, but the next had a fight scene that was so horribly written I had to stop right there. He would describe an action and then immediately follow it up with an explanation of what he just described. It's really terrifying how this is seen as some of the best stuff being currently written in the genre.

You're assuming that the anon you originally insulted writes for the purpose of being known. Anybody who's created anything knows that you create because you NEED to, not to share with anyone else. You're clearly projecting your own unconscious desire to be known. Which is sad, because nobody will ever care about you. Been reading Way of Kings by Sanderson. I knew he was known for having thoroughly mediocre prose, but damn. There's almost no artistry here at all, and there's just long ass blocks where he's telling and telling and telling about shit. He really feels like the ur example of modern epic fantasy. Everything about it, from long blocks of self-indulgent text full of nonsense words to explanations of magic systems with almost no artistry whatsoever, it really feels like he'd be more at home working in videogames or something. In lieu of anything else to read, and because I'm morbidly curious, I'll probably keep going. Still, it's no wonder anons here are so depressed about the current state of fantasy when he's not just, like, a C lister but THE HOTTEST SHIT in the industry.
