Is Earthsea worth reading?

Very much. It's YA so it's probably best enjoyed if you're a teenager but it's such a comfy story of self discovery with a pretty unique setting that it makes it quite enjoyable even if you're older.
Starting with Book 4, the fairy like tone is kinda gone because Le Guin caught feminism, so you can stop reading after book 3 if you feel like.

First book - yes. A true classic of the fantasy genre that sits up there with Tolkien.
Second and third - if you are keen.
The rest - if you want to see the author deconstruct her own creation from a feminist perspective.

I had to read the first book in 6th grade and it scared the living shit out of me. I constantly got cold chills and had a hard time falling asleep. It was the first time I ever encountered the concept of an evil creature (in this case the shadow) following you everywhere you went and literally not being able to lose it, it knowing exactly where you are at all times and it constantly walking in your direction.

Absolutely. It's fantasy in the best sense, a mysterious world with a real sense of wonder. The second book is totally different but probably my favorite, a more limited exploration of character.

Too many great books to waste time reading a woman
