Why does he assume that I am reading self help books?

Yes as always. It's always the same.

Yes. He will always be right.

Was literally having this thought in the shower this morning, whether or not I should read to inspire my writing or if I should try to not pollute my own thoughts with others'.

>> No.16407209

I read to get smarter, because my own thoughts ARE dryed up and I want to expand my mental horizans. He is correct: if I had a ton of on-hand knowledge to make sense of, I wouldn't need to read.

How do you know then that you read the "right" thing?

>> No.16407238

>>16407152
This unironically. You don't even need to ask. Was said by Schopenhauer? Then it's automatically true.

Not him, but there's no "the right thing"
If you read any philosopher or even any book, as opposed to not reading anything at all, you'll be left with another point of view. It doesn't matter if it's good or not, it's just matters that it's not yours and is written differently than you would. Sometimes there are even things mentioned that you never wondered about, and you can form your opinion on it merely by being exposed to it.
That's why you should just read whatever you want, whatever pulls you in at the moment.

That's only when you already know where you stand on. But when you're thoughts are dryed up it just needs someone who can argue convincingly and he could sell you stupid ideas.

That's why you need to think critically.

I didn't mean you'll adopt the writer's point of view. I meant that you'll become aware of the issue and take your own position in it, even if it's described from an extermist point of view.
I generally think that one should never take a decisive position in any topic unless you've read enough about it from advocates of two contrary opinions

>> No.16407347

I see where he's coming from. Any position can find enough data and put it together logically enough to be plausible. So you need to either read enough and know enough from all views that you can balance it out and make a reasonable conclusion, or you're better off using your own intuition, reason, bias, and personal viewpoint to form organic opinions and only look to read when you can't make an opinion on something

Of course he totally discounts poetry and fiction with that quote

100% agree, /lit/ is full of degenerate mind-slugs that wiggle their way across the safe dirt made moist by their golden idols.

>> No.16407830

no he is wrong, my thoughts never dry up, my imagination has never run out the world is too inspiring, but still I would never think the thoughts of others so I enjoy reading them.

Intelligence is fixed for life. You cannot get smarter by anything short of drugs and neurosurgery. You can improve innate intelligence by stimulating the intellectual part of your mind and you can impair it by giving it over to pleasure and lust.

Many threads serve merely to show how many ways there are of being wrong, and how far astray you yourself would go if you followed OP's guidance. You should only read /lit/ when your own thoughts dry up.
