what works should i read beforehand to understand plotinus?
can i just jump in blind and read his works or do i need to have some context?

Since he was a devout polytheist, I would recommend you reading up on some myths. Also his philosophy is an unbroken line of thought from Plato so you should read Plato beforehand too.

All of the Greeks, so you can understand how Plotinus or the Neoplatonists are a different school of thougth essentially to Plato and interpret and understand him in the context of their own thought, different to his-- though they thought it was one and the same.

reading the Enneads in the order they were published apparently makes no sense, you need to get a guide, to fully understand his different lectures
