Can't remember where I read it but I once read of how the son of a farmer was going to feed the farms pigs and tripped near a pig pen and got his arm up to his shoulder stuck through the bars of the pig cage/pen. Why go through all that instead of just killing the person? My guess is that this kind of things are done for symbolical reasons, rather than practical ones. Putting on a public show isn't done to deter other people from doing the same crime (Beccaria pointed out that public executions don't stop crimes, not even with human beings), but rather, to strengthen the sense of community, to show that anyone (not just people, but animals too) who try to subvert the founding values of society will be put to death in a humiliating and painful way.

I suppose the point is an affirmation/validation of the values you believe in, even if the execution is pointless and silly. It's like when someone says "fuck drumpf!!" or "fuck minorities!!" and starts a circlejerk of people saying the same thing. They don't accomplish anything in saying the same thing over and over, but it feels good to be part of that experience.
