I consume my fiction via audiobook format when I drive. I thinks its a decent way to enjoy a medium of entertainment if that's all your using it for. Philosophy, etc ought to be read.

For me Audiobooks and Real books are pretty much the same. I can appreciate the writing more and take my time with an actual copy, and audiobook are great for when you're busy with chores, work or driving but still eager to learn something. Overall I guess I prefer actual copies for obvious reasons.

Being elitist is good and based, but audiobooks are mostly fine. You mainly shouldn't do it for anything important because you don't want the voice actor making your decisions about characterization for you. There is a surprising amount of ambiguity in how most characters "should" be read. I listened to some Stephen Fry audiobooks of Sherlock Holmes stories a while back and while he was very charming and ostensibly a good reader for Sherlock (which he clearly loves), he turned Sherlock into a supercilious cunt for some reason. It clashed completely with his character. Even lines that were meant to be read warmly and ingenuously were read as cunty, wry for the sake of wry shit.

This isn't such a big deal if you are reading pulp for fun but it can be significant. You have to at least be mindful of it.

On the other hand I suppose some voice actor might be brilliant and read something in a way you never anticipated, opening up new possibilities for you. I've had that happen especially with poetry. It's been very helpful for me to listen to a few readings of a poem to get a decent one, because I find I speed through poems and verses looking for the "point" but with poetry naturally the "point" is just as often contained in the form, or the interplay of the form with what is said. People who are more natural lovers of poetry can force me to slow down and read the poem properly by doing what comes natural to them. However you have to dig a bit because 9 out of every 10 poem readings on Youtube is some old mopey fuck who thinks melancholy, half-invested low-energy mumbling is the recipe for instant gravitas.

just checked. reddit is of the opinion that you can say you read the book if you listen to it in audio form, actually

This, the quality of the actual book matched with the quality of the reader matter infinitely more than how they choose to read them. An avid reader can read quickly and better to the point where audiobooks are needless. But for beginners it's just a sign of inexperience and training wheels and not any sort of laziness or bad faith.
