I don't want ambiguous thrillers which never specify if there's a supernatural element or not.

Because contrary to what the language implies, "bestseller" doesn't actually mean "bestseller". Bestseller is a brand, the name of a list that New York Times publishes of books that have sold a lot of copies. So any book that makes that list can call itself a "New York Times Bestseller!" but note the absence of a list ordinal on that descriptor. If a book actually was the "bestseller" it would say instead: "Number 1 Besteller" indicating it was at the top of the list.

He's not, actually. If you pay attention to what he's saying, he's really complaining about fans of the genre. After all if Tolkien really was as weak and unappealing as he indicates, surpassing him in the mind of the fantasy-reading community would simple. Yet instead he's forced to rail against Tolkien's enduring legacy and popularity, so what he ultimately has a problem with is not Tolkien, it's Tolkien's popularity. Which is to say, he hates fantasy readers for liking Tolkien. Which when you think about it, explains why he's not that popular. Readers can sense contempt from an author.

It is weak. The spellcasting is shaky, but the biggest issue is that it's not really explained where the magical energy comes from but from muh heart and muh emotions. So mc is in bad situation, almost dying etc, but then the enemy does something to piss him off and mc just finds it in him, he pulls (out of his ass) more magical energy to cast one final spell, and then later he pulls even more magical energy from his ass. Because most of them realize they're pretty mediocre writers who will be forgotten in a few decades like the hundreds of fantasy authors that came after Tolkien that no one remembers, their whole body of work being sold for $3 in some small used books stores while literary titans like Tolkien are still household names almost a century later.
Small men lashing out at big men out of jealous basically.

More literary fantasy is popular, usually shit from older authors but not necessarily, like Tolkien, Roger Zelazny, Gene Wolfe, Guy Gavriel Kay, Jack Vance, Crowley, Bujold, etc.

Anything more modern/popular is half hated and half loved. There are a lot more Sanderson, Abercrombie, and Martin fans here than the angry posters would have you believe. Don’t hear much hate for Hobb though, but she’s hard to hate.

Of course it is. World-building is the least important aspect of storytelling which is why it's the easiest aspect. There's a reason why so many modern writers focus so much on world-building and not their stories, characters, or even STYLE of writing. To be fair though there's a lot of retarded readers who only care about world-building as well. Honestly I don't think you can have one without the other, the world is a window to view the characters, the characters are a vehicle to explore the world, for a book to really stand out you need to balance a good story with an interesting setting.
Ultimately though a good story will lean more towards the characters journey so chances are no matter how much world building you do, you're gonna have to leave aside a lot of it so the book doesn't feel like it's just going off on these completely unrelated tangents all the time.

Also, please write a post about how I just want you to stop liking what I don't like and about how art is purely subjective and is exclusively meant to be entertainment. Or maybe one about how Sanderson is a great writer exploring deep philosophical themes. I like those very much.

Yes. I hate dindus, but I love Sword & Sorcery and this book is good S&S regardless of the African fantasy setting and all the characters being black and the writer as well. It's a short story collection, but the stories are chronological and narratively lead into each other so it really feels like a full length novel. I can't vouch for the other Imaro books though or anything else the writer has written, but this book is solid and makes full use of it's African setting without any WE WUZ bullshit (these stories were written in the 70s before that crap caught fire.)

What sort of things help you make something that doesn't feel forced or long winded explanations? How do you introduce the reader to elements of your setting that are going to be strange without wasting pages just explaining?
