So mc is in bad situation, almost dying etc, but then the enemy does something to piss him off and mc just finds it in him, he pulls (out of his ass) more magical energy to cast one final spell, and then later he pulls even more magical energy from his ass. Of course it is. World-building is the least important aspect of storytelling which is why it's the easiest aspect. There's a reason why so many modern writers focus so much on world-building and not their stories, characters, or even STYLE of writing. Honestly I don't think you can have one without the other, the world is a window to view the characters, the characters are a vehicle to explore the world, for a book to really stand out you need to balance a good story with an interesting setting.
Ultimately though a good story will lean more towards the characters journey so chances are no matter how much world building you do, you're gonna have to leave aside a lot of it so the book doesn't feel like it's just going off on these completely unrelated tangents all the time.

Not everybody reads to self-insert. In fact I find self-inserting to be harmful to enjoying books most of the time. When you do it you bring too much of your own emotional baggage and tend to ignore the characterization of the protagonist in favor of your own feelings. Yes. I hate dindus, but I love Sword & Sorcery and this book is good S&S regardless of the African fantasy setting and all the characters being black and the writer as well. It's a short story collection, but the stories are chronological and narratively lead into each other so it really feels like a full length novel. I can't vouch for the other Imaro books though or anything else the writer has written, but this book is solid and makes full use of it's African setting without any WE WUZ bullshit (these stories were written in the 70s before that crap caught fire.)
