Everyone who takes a look at contemporary publishing is aware of how much more the connections and ethnic background/sex/class of the author matter in comparison to the work itself. Considering this, do you think there are canonical works where we have been memed into forcibly canonizing them, then later accepting them as canonical due to their age and stature? Do you think time sorts it all out in the end, or are you more pessimistic and believe that deciding what's canonical and what's not is the privilege of the few, and the rest of us have no real say in the matter?

Well, it seems to me that deciding whats canon is the privilege of no-one but myself. That is the very limiting case of 'the few' I suppose.
But then contemporary publishing is utterly fucked and desperately grasping at straws so I don't think you can draw any real conclusions but using it as an example.
