Tolstoy is better, but his narcissism and megalomania gives way here and there when you know what to look for, you can figure out which character he wants you to hate.

Chekhov, on the other hand, seems to be one of the few true artists who was good, he shouldered the burden of providing for his family at a young age, and in the anecdotes of his life always came off to me as a kind man who did whatever work in his hands the best he knew how. I do sense that kindness in him. Tolstoy often puts on the rose colored glasses (who can forget Levin in the fields with the peasants?) while Chekhov seems to be taking off the rose colored glasses of someone who has forgotten they were wearing them, but he’s not blackpilled or a depressive in my mind. He’s almost like Shakespeare in that there is this natural disposition towards a happy, knowingly foolish cleverness and positive outlook, which is then paired with a high intelligence not unfamiliar with pain, in itself or others. That’s how Shakespeare started, writing bawdy comedies and then glorious tragedies and finally diamond-like plays in the late romances. I think they are alike in that way.

Tolstoy is more sui generis, more uncannily brilliant (those battle scenes in War and Peace!), but Chekhov does have something quite rare as well, I believe it.

I would say that Chekhov isn’t so self-righteous as Tolstoy, I like his decadent-romantic bent. Still, I can’t real imagine Chekhov being able to put together a literary mammoth like Anna Karenina, with 800 pages and like 20 characters

Tolstoy is much more highly regarded in the West than in Russia (where Chekhov is generally considered to be the most significant Russian writer).

Westerners always think of Tolstoy and Dostoevsky as representative of Russian literature, but in Russia, they don't have quite the same pedigree (obviously still very important, but not definitively so).

I wonder why this is.

I don't know. I'm not Russian. However I speak Russian, and I interact with a lot of Russians, and it's my impression that the primacy of Tolstoy in particular is a largely Western notion, and that Chekhov is specifically revered. Turgenev in particular is perceived as a Western writer, who just happens to be from Russia.

The undisputed master of Russian literature is Pushkin. Tolstoy is extremely well regarded, Dostoevsky not so much. Lermentov is liked but his output just wasn't as significant as other authors. Anna Akhmatova is one of the best poets of the 20th century. Very few emigre authors really get much play: Nabokov in particular is nowhere near as popular in Russia as the United States (Lolita translated extremely poorly into Russian). Other anon is right that Chekhov is extremely well regarded: his short stories are considered masterpieces and plays like the Cherry Orchard maintain popularity to this day in Russia.
