Preface: meta posts are allowed.
Merge this board with /his/ and just call it /hum/ for humanities. As of the creation of this thread, these are some of the active threads:

>any booktubers worth their salt?
>beautiful name you liked from literature?
>/alfred janny/
>do you take the cover off
>words words words words... (pic of Spinoza attached)
>post pleb filters
>Took me 25 hours to read a 600 page book. How bad is this?
>post artwork, get a book recommendation
>modernity bad
>Spanish or Chinese?
>Any horrible takes on the Iliad?
>Any books which channel the energy of pic related?
>Books that will help me overthrow the international banking system?
>Literature & $€X
>Read "Sex and character"
>I told a girl im gonna take a stinky fix my brain rn
>Have you ever read a book that has LITERALLY turned you fucking insane?
>Any of you /lit/tards spin poi?
>Should I pretend to be a black woman to get published?
>Is he the most /lit/ songwriter?
>Post shelves
>Whats some lit that give off more of a seared bite than other novels?
>Are dog owners or cat owners better philosophers?
>books on indoor chicken farming? how to deal with the smell
>[Literally anything] Was never really tried.
>This is going to be my first manga I read,
>Wagner: Wagner
>Nietzsche? More like NEET-zsche!

>inb4 no fun allowed
This is what /lit/'s sticky says:
>/lit/ is for the discussion of literature, specifically books (fiction & non-fiction), short stories, poetry, creative writing, etc. If you want to discuss history, religion, or the humanities, go to /his/. If you want to discuss politics, go to /pol/. Philosophical discussion can go on either /lit/ or /his/, but those discussions of philosophy that take place on /lit/ should be based around specific philosophical works to which posters can refer.
>/lit/ is a SLOW BOARD! Please TAKE THE TIME to read what others have written, and try to make THOUGHTFUL, WELL-WRITTEN POSTS of your own. Bump replies are not necessary.
What's the point of board rules if nobody adheres to them? More than half the threads at any given time are complete filler made as a sort of "humorous" statement. Nothing thought provoking and nothing warranting discussion in such threads, just made to get replies, drown other threads as well as itself and then to create a new one. There is no point in having a literature board if maybe 10 posts are about literature and the rest are about "philosophers" - but are super vague and don't follow the guidelines of the sticky (i.e. they're not about a singular work or a thought within some work, they're just there to namedrop a certain philosopher and that's it).
The board should either have almost constant /general/s or just be merged with /his/ into one global humanity board - most people post on both and just oversaturate them with meaningless drivel.

Funny how this isn’t even true anymore. There’s a new catalog every two days. All these problems you complain of can be solved by less shitposts and more quality posts. Essentially the only way to improve /lit/ is reduce the post output. A slow board is the greatest incentive for quality posting. Why put effort when it’ll disappear in a few days and be lost under a mountain of shit in the archive? Indeed, 4chan by design selects for fleeting shitposts and attention grabbing images by format. If you want quality discussions, obscure forums and Reddit are better suited.

4chan is a simulation of a coffee house, not a parliament. Your complaints are ludicrous. Take this board for what it is and move on

I agree with the rest but this is fucking garbage. Generals are cancer and there's especially no need for them on a literature board. There's no need to merge with /his/ or create a philosophy board, it's fine the way it is. The board just needs to be actively moderated, but it won't happen because the mods don't care.

Instead of using your energy to create a better thread you create this bullshit meta thread. It's easier to condem threads then make your own.
Really this board is just to hang out with the more pretentious and '''''intellectual'''' side of 4chan, and people have fun here. It's filled with antagonisms and anons grabbing eachother by the throat. It takes effort to write a high effort post and it takes effort to engage with high effort posts. Most people come here to escape and communicate, but often despise other boards. So they come here and use thinly veiled literature threads to provoke a response, usually it's just to make people laugh or upset, sometimes just to vent their feelings. Is it really that bad?
I know that there are some hyper autistic people here that would want this place to become more serious and talk about 'deep' philosophy and 'deep' literature, these guys are boring as hell and need to be shot.
Fuck jannies.
Keep evading bans.
Keep shitposting.

unfortunately they didn't fuck off like they were supposed to so /his/ is just a festering heap and /lit/ is still crawling with vermin like before. now there are two shitty boards instead of one.

>> No.15992207

I'm really tired of people making low-effort complaint threads. Honestly they're worse than what they complain about. None of you know how bad it was during the peak of coordinated and invasive Guenon spam. And the threads always end with some stupid solution like "Let's kick out the philosophy people" and this merger idea. Fuck you all. There was actual mod abuse just weeks ago over the Horia Belcea spam which, like the Guenon spam, was actually invasive and annoying. But no, you idiots focus on shit that you can easily ignore and that's always been a thing. Fuck you all.
>OP somehow manages to complain about the Alfred Janny threads
Literally tilting at windmills at that point. Can we make a meta thread about how these complaint threads suck ass? And these are the threads jannies never delete, unlike the last REAL meta thread that resulted in a mass ban for actually calling the jannies out on their bullshit.

>> No.15992223

I agree that this is an issue but I don't see how merging with /his/ would help. Most of that board is retarded and underage. Philosophy would need it's own board, but that wouldn't help with the lack of quality content. I agree that we need generals for "Any books...?", "Bookshelves", "What language..." "I read 3 pages today..." etc., but the real issue is the moderation. Either it is nearly non-existent or it needs to be stricter. As far as we know there is only one mod on this board and it's butterfly.

How many effortposts do you make in all the other decent threads? I find myself sometimes spending a lot of time here but I barely ever post new threads. When I do there's a good 50/50 chance some will just get no attention, others get a lot. You can't control that. But you can control what posts you make in other threads. Make effortposts more often and you'll actually engage in serious discussions with people. Reply to other people who also make effortposts. People complaining because nobody go to their threads but who also don't go to anyone else's threads probably shouldn't be here. I don't mean that to be mean. I mean, if you have zero overlap with the people here, even the ones making effortposts, why bother staying?

>What's the point of board rules if nobody adheres to them?
Freedom of speech requires a sufficient number of people in a community to respect their personal responsibility to make free speech work by not abusing it because nobody will stop them. This in turn requires at least some community policing to discourage those who would abuse freedom of speech using the soft power of social disapproval and ostracization (i.e. not feeding trolls.)
The problem with 4chan at large, and /lit/ in particular is that it has been completely overrun by disingenuous trolls who don't care about the open and free discussion of ideas, but to promote their ideology and to shut down any and all dissent. The community is completely rotten, filled with the most vicious fuckers on the internet, and is a completely lost cause at this point. Board-merging or rule-changing won't fix the issue, because the issue is with the community itself.

Agree entirely. What are these threads everyone is hoping for? Do they not see all the discussion going on already? Even in these so-called shitpost threads the level of discussion is high quality. Nearly every other post appears to be written by someone who has done their share of reading and likely has a bachelor degree or higher. What does it matter that they synthesize and explore their views using curt and non-academic language? I love this board.

x was always bad is a poor argument. The old /lit/ I browse was focused mostly on fiction and philosophy with several creative writing threads. The average post length was FAR longer and the total daily post count was lower as well. This created a much more healthy environment for discussion. Jezebelposting was quite rare back then (and it was generally more rare on 4chan). The only development /lit/ went through that isn't strictly worse is the change from a more fiction-oriented board to a board with more philosophical and political discussions. In practice all it leads to is shitty bait threads full of retards swinging one word posts and reaction images at each other.

I’ve been on 4chan for many years, and I’ve thought about ways to improve boards, and read others suggest ways to improve boards.

You’re arguing for reducing the capacity of both lit and his, to create hum. I’m not opposed to hum, it allows discussion of topics that aren’t clearly his or clearly lit. But to remove his and lit, and replacing them with hum, is a bad idea in my opinion.

It doesn’t make sense to limit freedom and thread capacity, unless you want to make some argument for smaller boards having less shit threads and therefore better board culture.

But in this case, you should consider this. You didn’t make an actually good thread, you made a metathread. Perhaps you should spend more time actually reading books, instead of reading 4chan threads, and then creating good threads here.

It often seems that the people who want to change a board spend too much time on 4chan, instead of the activity the board is related to. In some cases this is okay, /fit/ for example can have several hours of daily discussion on topics, where people would spend less than an hour per day doing compound lifts.

But lit is not fit. You can’t actually read books and then spend more time on the board. I can read at a leisurely pace of 30 pages per hour. So I’d have to spend 10 hours on a 300 page book. If I want to discuss that book, I’d start a thread, and I’d probably discuss it for a couple of hours.

If you find yourself caring more about fixing the board than actually reading books, maybe you should check your priorities

>I would like to have books be less mandatory to lit discussion
You don't like literature. You don't even have the sense to realise how little you read, and so include in your objections memes which have literary backing without the slightest hint of irony. It's kind of sad. It's like watching someone complain to /a/ that nobody wants to discuss boko no pico after so many anons recommended it, and knowing that the poster is serious in his perplexity.

a quick count shows 1, 1, and 0, respectively
considerably fewer than the number of shitty religion and pop philosophy threads

The sooner that people realize that 4chan is flawed by design, and either move somewhere else or learn to cope with it, the better it will be for them, the shitposters and the circlejerking mongoloids that make up the moderation team.

All of these were in the catalogue for hours last night, some of them are still up:
>2 LotR threads with movie screencaps and /tv/ memes
>Joe Rogan thread with 200+ replies
>a thread about crushes on cute boys
>how exhausting slamming tinder thots is
>bait post about tfw no gf with a /tv/ meme pasta
>some zoomer rapper
>3 soijack threads
>The Avengers

All this against one neverending threat for White Fragility. /Pol/ isn’t taking over the board it’s people from /tv/ that were literal redditors 3 months who want a place to discuss pop culture.

How is there a thread about Joe Rogan for 24 hours? The jannies literally must just sweep the catalogue once a day.

The best thing you can do is just be vocally hostile (and always sage) any mid-wit fiction that is part of a popular movie franchise or television show.

Yes, the staples of cancer on this board. There's nothing worthwhile in those threads, it's the imageboard equivalent of "booktubing" – nothing but vanity and superficial small talk. There's no place for it.
