I just started reading pynchon (lot 49), and I'm wondering, could you describe it as kafkaesque?

>> No.15946850

i think about it as magical realism desu

>> No.15946856

No. Do you even know what the fuck "kafkaesque" even means? Have you even read Kafka?

yeah I read kafka but I'm not sure about the word, I thought it means that weird shit happens all of a sudden (like a criminal court being in a residential building), and the protagonist just accepts it without really pondering

Nah that's basically just surrealism. Kafkaesque is that sense of mundane and dull dread that pervades through, the bureaucratic nightmare, the dim smoky lighting and the tiny cramped rooms. Kafka is sort of on the depressed side of surreal, whereas Pynchon is more on the manic side, with bright colours and characters and constant shifts between exposition and narrative.
