Not watching like the other anons already said, but I can find no downsides of people reading Plato.

I think Pewdiepie is an embarrassing human that somehow managed to make /lit/ even worse than it already was by sending his uneducated virgin fans here en masse.

Because these faggots want to think they have an acquired taste, and that makes them special. If philosophy became mainstream it would objectively be a good thing, but they can't handle the fact that they'd be the same as some plebian that started reading because of a YouTube video.

Yeah, good point. It's that they deny that they are just like everyone else. Honestly, there's nothing wrong with admitting you are average. The ego attachment we get from acquiring knowledge is what causes pain.

His argument in Crito is nonsense when you take into account the fact that Socrates directly disobeyed the 30 Tyrants earlier in his life.

There's a sense of elitism that comes with the hobby of reading. The board does recieve higher levels of shit posts as a result, but the resentment is predominantly born of gatekeeping.

>> No.15877868

>>15873685
Presumably because, although he's reading, his interpretation and the few base vagaries he's managed to discern are wholly unbefitting to the significance of the work he's read
Not all reading is equal, simply reading a book from front to cover isn't the purpose - especially if you haven't understood the work in its entirety. The reason most people are against this kind of populism in reading is that it will distort their view of the others as to what reading is right from the "get-go", going to get a whole generation of pseuds who are going to go through all the great works like a shopping list, only to end up as unthinking as they were before they read their first word; only now having several arbitrary works of literature to cite to verify their 'sophistication'

Something like that

Then again, what do you really expect from a gaming youtuber who has branched out into classical literature and philosophy, but think the dislike is based more on the casual nature of his reading more than anything else

I'm 5 mins in and it's world's better than most first takes on The Republic, he's recognised that there is nuance and that the form is important. If everyone who read Plato and posted here were as thoughtful as this it would be great.

I'm expecting something to annoy me eventually but I am pleasantly surprised.
