Read the first chapter of Lot 49 and feel like I didn't understand more than half the sentences. Feels bad being an ESL I really wanted to like him because his stuff sounds fascinating. But no matter how often I read some of the sentences I just don't get what they're saying it's weird.

I do that a ton already but I'm not sure how the casual language employed here is gonna help me defuse Pynchon's weird ass syntax.

The shape of the letter is important the same way that the rainbow in Gravity’s Rainbow means multiple things

>> No.15869699

Try to read inherent vice. It's not his best but I think his language is a little simpler in that and could help you get acclimated to his style.

>> No.15870378

>>15869558
If the syntax is your main issue, I'd second the other anon's advice and start with Inherent Vice. Vineland would also be a good start. Once you have a better grasp on the way he structures things, you can try CoL49 again.
Good on you for reading it in English, Pynchon is one of the many authors where the original intended language is important.

Thanks, will do. Are all his newer books written in a easier way or just Inherent Vice?

>> No.15870529

>>15870428
Easier than Gravity’s Rainbow and Mason and Dixon (best of luck with that one if you’re an ESL), but still harder than Chinese algebra.

>> No.15870535

>>15870428
Just Inherent Vice and Vineland.
Bleeding Edge is a bit easier than his other works, but still pretty weird. The others are all very intricate. I'd say Mason & Dixon is the hardest, followed by Gravity's Rainbow and Against the Day. V is about equal to CoL49.

>> No.15872249

>>15869558
I'd also recommend Inherent VIce, but also Bleeding Edge. It's easier to read like the other minor-key Pynchon works, but it's also based in the present and the pop-culture references are easier to pick up on for someone that's online a lot of the time (which I'm guessing you are since you're on here)

should i read gravity's rainbow or bleeding edge if i didnt like inherent vice or col49? GR sounds like naked lunch (experimental disturbing half sci-fi) and i love naked lunch but IV and col49 didnt feel to impactful. they had fun parts but they werent a "one big ride" you know. the plots didnt feel thight and the conspiracies werent menacing at all. IV did have some heart and depth though. anyways are GR and BE more engaging or masterful?

>> No.15873150

>>15873132
no

gr is not naked lunch

i dont think you'll enjoy bleeding edge, it's more or less iv's twin
