Dune isn't genre, it's high literature.

You're right and I was wrong. Actually Dune isn't fiction.

>dismissive
Not really. Even if Postmodernism breaks cultural barriers and mixes low and high art, there's still a sense that low art existed in the first place.

There's a particular threshold it has to meet before it surpasses anime and hollywood bullshit.
That being said, you can't really go wrong with works that gained popularity prior to Akira and Harry Potter.

No. Having a story in a different setting than real life let's authors explore themes that may otherwise be impossible or to simply view them in a new perspective. "What does it mean to be human" is an age-old question but with science fiction the question can be explored with artificial intelligence. The downfall is that it can be easy for an author to represent the unique characteristics of their selected genre in such a way that it resembles a strawman fallacy and the author instead becomes a propagandist.

That's pretty much all genre fiction, it's one gigantic strawman for something or another.

anime and YA are cancers on the fiction genre, obviously.

Well, if you have fun, it's not a waste of time for you. That being said, genre fiction has much lower standards and fucking dreadful discussion communities. No matter how absolutely shit a fantasy/scifi novel is, it will always have at least a hundred people back it up because "it's just for fun, it's not high literature". The trick is to find genre fiction that's fun and literary. I think Dune gets pretty damn close. People here like Book of the New Sun, so I'm giving that a try too.

I already graduated. Just saying that a good use of time is subjective. There's a ton of STEMfags who'll say reading anything that won't make you money is a waste of time, /pol/tards who'll say anything not written by Whites is a waste of time, and /x/fags who'll say any history is a waste of time.
