Fiction is no better than playing videogames. Why even bother with it? Because pic related: you're weak and want to escape.

Good fiction means good story, good plot, well developed characters, very good fiction will also have a good writing style, good prose. All of these things are beneficial towards developing ones literary abilities. Games or tv on the other hand are mainly visual mediums and have none of these.

videogames are made to be sold, you must like them, they not need to be true. yet some fiction and fantasy are made to tell truth which otherwise cannot be properly expressed. examples: don quijote, stranger in a strange land, dune, hobbit/lotr.

Someone who is unable to learn anything from fiction can't learn things from life itself, anon. While he might have control over technique, he would lose control over his life and delegate that to whoever is willing to take it. I think Rand accidentally, or purposely, illustrates that in a decent manner.

Does not exist, cope
There is no truth in fiction but by accident. That one could think otherwise is a sign one is mentally deficient

>fiction is false anecdote.
That makes it even better. There's no merit in just repeating something that really happened. Anyone can do that. But inventing something has far more artistic merit.

Escape from what? The experience of fiction is as real as the experience of non-fiction. Both are ultimately sense-data that is impressing itself upon you. One is no less real than the other, so neither offer any such 'escape', only alternative perspectives of the reality impressing itself upon you. The fact you argue for the experience of non-fiction over fiction specifically in regards for 'escape' tells me that you're the coward who seeks such 'escape' in non-fiction and you project that desire you haven't reconciled with, probably due to your own self-loathing, onto those who prefer fiction.

A maths textbook can't teach you much about poetry. A history textbook can't teach you very much about poetry. Aristotle can teach you a bit about poetry through non-fiction. But why read the latter without the context of poetry? As someone else said, fiction is a thing in the world. Denying what exists in the world is 'escapism' in its own right. An immature fear of what does exist.

Non-fiction is for soulless bugmen.
Fiction and poetry are for dandy fops who fuck everything, do tons of drugs, and die in their late 20's.
The short life of a dandy fop is far better than an eternity as a bugman.
