Anyone else think The Dead was a bit too long? I feel some things could have been left out and it really only picked up in the last 10 pages or so, which were of course amazing.

There's a Dubliners thread already. The Dead is to be understood in the context of this short story collection. There are two answers to your questions. First, there is not a single page of Dubliners which can be called unnecessary or devoid of meaning, so The Dead is not too long. Second, if somebody would read The Dead to you out loud, you would likely fall asleep before the ending, because as an oral story it is boring as hell, and in this sense, The Dead is far too long.
