You read pop fiction and almost nothing else. The only non fiction I can see is one of those "1001 movies you must see before you die!" books.

You even have a book called "The Lord of the Rings: Weapons and Warfare", no one needs to read something like that.

The only reason I'm giving you a pass is because I see you read R.D Laing.

You know I've been meaning to read Sapiens for a couple of years now.

I met this Scottish college graduate outside of a club in downtown Tokyo (Roppongi Hills I think, might have been in Shizuoka) drunk off his ass, and he and I struck up this conversation about mankind and how crazy globalization is. Long story short, he mentioned to me that he had just finished reading this book (Sapiens), and it fascinated me from what he described of it.

Then he started going off about how he was travelling mainland China and basically got forced to have sex with Chinese prostitutes in a club or else the people who owned the club were going to kill them. He was a nice guy but damn it seems like he was drowning his sorrows in booze. The 21st century is fucking wild.

why does /lit/ have such a problem with the material culture associated with the hobby? Every other artistic endeavor gets to have fun collecting random shit and being a little performative in how they relate to their given field, but it's as if in liking literature you've also signed up to this philosophical covenant of anti-aesthetics and immaterialism

fuck it, some people want to use type-writers or collect random ornaments, antiques and books that aren't only waterlogged paperbacks acquired for ten cents. we're not all broke uni students and artistic sincerity in every sense gets boring really fucking quickly

Somehow a safari hat ends up being less pretentious than the complaints of jim halpert reaction poster who carefully adds "or whatever" to every indictment to make sure its clear he totally doesnt give a fuck

It’s because people who love literature have literally nothing else. That’s why it always devolves into intellectual circle-jerking. Anyone who actually spends time and money collecting high quality books and trinkets with meaning is sneered at and called a poser, psued etc that never even cracked a book because it makes these fucking losers feel better about themselves “yeah I might be a misanthropic loner but look at this faggot psued hehe”

It’s not just 4chan either. It’s every literature board I’ve ever been on. The days are gone when you look at something nice and complement it or aspire to something similar, believing that you could actually improve in life. Now we are just awash in this sea of cynicism that stamps the beauty out of life and pisses in the river of art. It’s the current cultural zeitgeist and I fucking despise it with ever fibre of my soul

You guys should join the communities on LibraryThing. It's all boomers who genuinely love literature and show that through physical libraries, many of which feature high-end productions.

I'm on the Folio Society Devotees and Fine Press Forum quite often.

https://www.librarything.com/groups/foliosocietydevotee

https://www.librarything.com/groups/finepressforum

From here, you can find any other general or specific community you're interested in.

No one is going to make fun of you here. It's one of the precious few bastions of respectful intellectual discourse on the internet.

And if anyone from this thread sees the link and tries to troll on there, you'll just be reported and removed rather quickly. The community self-polices exceedingly well.

its a nice little thing i picked up from epcot in disney world from my last trip there. in the german section theres a nice little gift shop with a bunch of things, along with (more expensive) beersteins with chunks of the berlin wall glued on but i thought it was tacky. so i got this cool one with the eagle on it, in black. here's where it is now, with the two polandball plushies i have. big fan of those comics.

as for the hawking/sagan stuff, i enjoy the idea of space travel and space colonization but have settled for the more likely inevitability of never getting off this rock with the current social issues we are facing. and thats why i take interest in germany, besides part of my heritage, is the fact that they had the means, the minds, and the drive to accomplish that dream more than anyone else. its slipping now, in our hands. makes me a little bitter.
