Can /lit/ recommend their favorite works of horror? I have a cabin to myself this weekend and I want to be properly spooked.

It isn't, only weaklings like you will be erased, and that's a good thing.

Ligeia, a short story from Poe.
You can probably get it in a collection, I think his stuff is alright and although not nail-bitingly scary, it does contain some kino moments

Pound for pound I think short stories are a better medium than novels for horror. Stephen King for instance, has a lot of horror anthologies that are consistently better then his novels (of which I think Salems Lot and It are the best). Pretty much all his short story collections are great.
I spent a big part of last year reading horror anthologies though, most of the best ones came from a collection called 999 (from 1999). You can probably find most of them online. Some good ones are:

Americanski Dead at the Moscow Morgue - Kim Newman

Good Friday - F. Paul Wilson

Catfish Gal Blues - Nancy A Collins

Mad Dog Summer - Joe R Lansdale

All Through The Night - Elise Forier Edie

Really, of all the anthologies I read, that 999 one was the best. I also read all the volumes of Dark Screams, Haunted Nights and a couple of others. There’s some modern horror anthologies that have a sort of “theme” that all the stories are supposed to riff on. Like “The Devil and the Deep” is a bunch of horror stories about the sea. “Dead Letters” all have to do with mail. These seem to have a worse shit : not shit ratio though.

A couple of horror novels I’ve read that are pretty good are:
Those Across the River - Charles Buehlman (this one has prose that I think is a step above most good horror novels)

Rosemary’s Baby - Ira Levin (you know this one of course, but it’s pretty good and Levin is always a solid choice for a mid-brow timekiller)

The Witch’s Trinity - Erika Mailman (it’s about a witchhunt, but leans pretty hard into the realm of literary instead of just straight horror. Probably a good book for the woods though.)

The Great God Pan - Arthur Machen (19th Century and a minor classic)

Really though, when horror is bad, it’s bad. And it’s bad a lot more often than other genres seem to be. There’s a reason Stephen King has such a huge reputation, it’s that he’s so consistently reliable

The Fabled Lighthouse at Vina Del Mar - Joyce Carol Oates is very good if you like Lovecraft.
I hate Lovecraft.

I thoroughly recommend if you haven't yet The Vampyre by Polidori as my gothic recommendation. It sticks with you the more you think on it. And since people have already suggested Machen, Blackwood, and Lovecraft. I would highly suggest Clark Ashton Smith. Particularly, The Hunters From Beyond.

You should add The Ruins by Scott Smith to the list of good horror novels. His prose is also above-average for the genre.

Turn of the Screw is a really nice quick read. The plot is somewhat predictable until the end but the way James develops it is well worth the read. The twist at the end is great!
