This post is the sole reason I keep reading 50 pages each day no matter what

>> No.15656831

Damn. I never keep track of how much I read but I finish 200~300 page books in 3 days so about 60-100 a day usually.

A 'page' is not a universal metric, so this doesn't really mean much.

>> No.15656863

It takes me like an hour and a half to read 50 pages

>> No.15656869

The point still stands though. Small increments add up.

That list is way, way more than 18,250 (365 x 50) pages. In Search of Lost Time, Decline and Fall of the Roman alone gets you to like 8,000 pages. Clarissa is 1500, War and Peace 1200. Atlas Shrugged, Infinite Jest, and LOTR together are about 3,000. So 13,700. Years of Lyndon Johnson is another 3,000 or so. 16,700. Another 1300? The Bible, which is even longer. So yeah, way more.

It's because you read with big letters.
Try with small letters.

Pages truly are a perfect measurement.

Let me add that I don’t mean to discourage you, I’m just saying it’s not realistic to expect to read quite as much as that guy said

>2666 among all those great novels
Do burgers really...?

>> No.15657110

>>15657099
You do realize that 2666 is better than almost all the other books on that list right?

>> No.15657121

>>15657039
Is it possible it’s not the list but rather each individual book?
Like, you could read The Bible in under a year on 50 pages a day
You could read In Search of Lost Time in under a year on 50 pages a day
You could read War and Peace in under a year on 50 pages a day
Etc. etc.

sorry, I'd rather read when I feel like it.

I can't imagine what it's like on the other end of the spectrum.

It's only better than Harry Potter and Autlas Shrugged and other lesser pieces like The Stand. In fact, the entire US popularity if it relies on comments made by Oprah Winfrey who said it was like "reading a good Harry Potter book."

Yeah, no worries. The list is obviously exaggerated. It would be something like 200 pages per day or something like that. Still, I have already read a decent portion of the books listed there, and some of the others I don't even care about i.e. Atlas Shrugged, Harry Potter, et al.

My point is that a seemingly daunting list might look more approachable once you forget about entirely about it and limit you to just read 50 pages (or whatever) each day. Also I wanted to remark the importance of building a habit of reading every day. At least these are the tips that have worked for me

Don't focus on pages, focus on the amount of time you can read. And start small, read for as long as you can keep total focus and gradually increase that period of time.

There's no point reading this much if you're not also studying it. I study an hour for every hour of reading I do.

In Search of Lost Time alone will take up about 3 months if you read 50 pages a day. Don't kid yourself, this is a list of like 30-40 (some dense as fuck) doorstoppers. I don't want to discourage you or anything but even if you read a book like Infinite Jest for 50pgs a day(which you won't since the text is way too difficult for speedreading) you will never fully understand the book. I spent about an hour reading 15 pages of IJ last night, that should give you a rough estimate of how dense some of those books can be, good luck with trying to read 50pgs a day of books like Infinite Jest, GR or even Joyce's stuff.

I agree with this anon and would recommend everyone to just read as slowly as possible while trying to get the most of what's in front of you. There is no shame in spending an hour on a couple dozens pages if you are being actively engaged, challenged, enlightened and entertained by it.

Infinite Jest is actually quite an easy book but I get the message. Indeed I'm a slow reader and read like 10 - 15 pages per hour if the text is moderately difficult. That's why I force myself to read a determinated ammount of pages per day instead of just reading X hours, 'cause otherwise I would never make any progress
