it got sold to me as a condemnation of a society straying from God. the very first guy to eat it is spreading propaganda about how Christ was not a real historical figure. the young poet quits the literary scene after being reprimanded by a middle aged writer who is full of regret from participating in the same scene. the theater goers all clamor after money, apparel and glamor. everyone is stomping all over each other for basic housing, which ends up being one of the primary causes of the misery of the titular character. it's not too complicated, even with the allegorical messages of the headcanon pilate novel/criticism of the literary movements at the time.

maybe try reading that P&V 50th anniversary paperback that's popular? it's got good footnotes and the translation is extremely accessible.
