Lol not even close. Great novel, but anyone whose taken a modern literature course has read it, or was at least meant to. I'll wager one bitcoin, however, that I'm the only person on /Lit/ to have read pic related. I got obsessed with Conrad and read his full bibliography, chronologically. This is one of two novels he cowrote with Ford Madox Ford.

WhatI love about Conrad is that he demands you read each novel twice. When Stevie is first introduced, he is described thus:
>For he was difficult to dispose of, that boy.
>But as errand-boy he did not turn out a great success.
It is impossible to get the dark humour at work here until you know what happens to Stevie, which you shouldn't know till the end of the book.

I can't say I'm studied enough (or even at all) in music to be able to appreciate it. I can only but like Goethe's Faust more because so much of the prose about the qualities of the music in Doctor Faustus was just completely outside of my comprehension.

These books are in the Ethiopian Old Testament but you cannot find them anywhere, not even collected translations of other para-biblical writings which include obscure and late stuff. They're never mentioned in academic discussion of biblical pseudepigrapha and seem to have received basically no notice in academia (there are a handful of journal articles if you really dig). This is a self published translation by a random Ethiopian guy.

Their existence is really interesting, it seems the narrative portions were composed to fill a gap in the Ethiopian canon which didn't include the Greek books of the Maccabees. They remind me of Judith, the setting is a garbled Biblical past and the theme is standing up to tyrannical, idol-worshipping kings. That's only about 1/3rd of the material though, the rest is a load of preaching about how to be pious and is a bit tedious.
