Has the video essay replaced the essay?

Pic related, and what do you think of the recent video: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=vRBsaJPkt2Q ?

video essays = mostly entertainment with some intellectual content for the masses. ultimately a good thing, but if you want to discuss anything more sophisticated you can't put it in this format because people would just stop paying attention. the essay is still superior, and you should try to read writings over youtube commentary whenever it is possible.

No, I can probably read the transcript of this whole thing in 20 minutes. Plus I can easily look for something later if I ever need to look back into a text.

Don't get me wrong, videos/audios are cool and everything, but text is great.

I agree the video format limits you in terms of sophistication, but you also have to remember that the vast majority of written essays are not sophisticated. When I pick up a think tank journal at the library most of it is your average midwit stuff.

The internet is undeniably culturally important in the 21st century. What happens on the internet might be silly or w/e, but that would just be a reflection of contemporary culture.

I think they have a long way to go before they offer any interesting discussion, but it makes sense that visual and aural stimulation would replace raw text in our overstimulated time. It's a lot easier to sit through a video essay than it is to sit and read in silence.

I agree that oral debate is the lowest form of discourse. But a video essays is not a debate. People have spent a lot of time (usually) writing it, before filming it.

Of course, because the lecture was what was prepared for, and the transcript is merely a record of that. Not analogous to an essay, which is written with a view to be read and studied with care. For any given thinker, I would much prefer to read an essay they'd written on a given topic than to attend a lecture of their's on the same topic.

>> No.15444587

>>15444354
No, clearly. Essays are based partially on quality of writing but mostly on quality of ideas. I can name you a lot of famous essayists who couldn't string together a sentence. I can name you no major YouTubers who are bad at making jokes or entertaining. People go on YouTube to have fun; you can't succeed without making good content, not just being an interesting thinker. Thus, the people who rise to the top aren't great philosophers or something but rather entertainers who dabble in the most pseud (if they even try at all) shit possible.

Okay, so the Contrapoints vid in the OP is generally poor quality. They're trying to hit certain dramatic beats, and there's not a lot of good establishment of ideas and support or discussion of those ideas. It's very thin. I would say it's clear where they're passionate as the quality is suddenly better when they're talking about trans or feminist stuff. When it comes to navigating social dynamics it's clear they find it a little alien and more or less fall back on a kind of tall poppy attitude. Some of the evidence, like fat people cringe, is misrepresented. Some of the ideas established at the start are poorly conceived and glossed over. Could have done with being about 1/3 of the length and, if it were to be an essay, bit more research outside of "I member Youtube".
