I met a lot of the friends who I can have serious discussion with at university. Our classes were beside the point, it’s the late-night alchohol-fuelled rambling which really sets the heart alight, and /lit/ is a good, if sometimes disappointing, facsimile of that.

Have you tried looking into reading groups? You may find some like-minded people there. There are also lots of literature societies which host regular lectures, which any member of the public can pay small fees to join. There are plenty of ways to network with intellectual people that don’t require still being in university.

I just asked a bunch of friends whether they would want to read GEB together and meet once a week.
Most said they didn't have time, some only came a few times.
The rest of us still meets once a week but we stopped the reading club and now just talk about whatever each of us is reading. Really fun group!
