Whenever i spend my free time on gaming i feel like im doing something wrong.

It seems that what is respected in this world is when you are good at something. In an ideal world, all the free time should be spent on something you enjoy that makes you grow but reading and drawing are a chore because i understand so little of the philosophy i read and i still suck at drawing. Is the point of life to power through all these thoughts of "this is boring" knowing that the right way is one of constant struggle?

How do i force myself to stop playing games and actually draw more and so on? Start small go from there?

There was a somewhat interesting thread about lost media not that long ago that turned out to have legs, it was about a lost Oprah episode of all things.

Anyway, the problem with /x/ was and maybe still is a mod that was mother henning the place for ages, and transformed the board from posting some amazing spoopy greentexts and some half decent ARGs into having the most bullshit "nod paranormal =DDD off dopic" culture. If you posted a legit internet mystery or sometimes even something that was not outright schizo, you ran a good risk of getting a swift ban and your posts deleted.

My understanding of /x/ has always been "roughly what would fit in an episode of the X-files", rather than what a housewife who channels Colin Fry posting.

And yet you continue doing it-- guilt can be an addictive feeling as well. Consumption of porn is proof of this-- it's well documented that typically you seek what you consider sexual taboo in your pornography. Hence doing something "bad" makes you feel good.

I invite you instead of trying with the obvious mindset that defeat is inevitable-- to relax. Stop forcing or powering through stuff that you consider boring. Rather, just identify your patterns and change them with the least amount of resistance. Allow yourself other stimuli. Binge in excess to magnify your gaming habit's adverse effects. Make new friends and let go of people who do not share your vision of your ideal self.

Yes, but if you go out into the woods and bang on some trees because you believe that allows you to communicate with bigfoots that also bang on trees, that you're just communicating with other people doing the same bullshit is a possibility. There have been some cool bigfoot things posted though.

I think you should go in with a not overly critical mind, like open it enough that your brain might fall out, but let's also investigate shit and play devil's advocate instead of wanking each other off. One of the best threads I've been in there was discussing the Barney and Betty Hill abduction, and that evolved beautifully.

Anyway, imo if /x/ was truly /x/, with corona we'd have seen an increase in number station posting. Think about that for 5 mins or so. Instead it's bollocks. I can get behind the Harry Potter answer, no joke. My mom encouraged me to read the first one when I was 7 and the world drew me in like nothing else. I read through all the books multiple times. Whenever the fifth one came out, I had to get it in English (which isn't my native language) on release day just so I could devour that bad boy before any of my asshole classmates could spoil it for me.

Harry Potter books got me reading and basically gave me a lifelong hobby. I immediately expanded into Narnia whilst waiting for the new Harry Potter books to come out, and I just kinda went on from there. Talked with my mom some time ago and she still claims her initial goal was to spark an interest in literature in the first place because she's also an avid reader and thinks it enriches lives in ways no other art form can. So, she considers her sneaky plan a success as do I.

Thanks mom, love you always.

Perhaps your problem is going too fast. Whereas dedication and hardwork might make you a good technical writer, or a good 'artist' -depending on who you ask- it certainly won't make you happier if it's not within your desire to begin with. Here's where the personal interests start to unfold, because, for me, there's more worth in being passionate than being dedicated; so here's where you enter into the question. What do you really want? If you have no interest on it, then there's no point on 'starting with the greeks' or reading exclusively philosophy, you could be more interested in a certain fictional genre, or in non fiction. Similarly to drawing, if you don't really enjoy drawing there's no point on forcing yourself to do so. Without the object, without the desire to move there's no point on learning to draw; you might get disencouraged after getting burnout, despite being a 'good artist'. Note that thus, the point of this commentary, suggestion, or experience is not to disencourage you on whatever your interests are. I'm just suggesting you to be honest with yourself. Productivity is valuable, but not without substance. Start slowly and see if there's really anything for you in it.

Sort of. There are people who have been posting a weird ad in the Arizona daily wildcat since the 80s, always in the May Day edition but also at other times of year too. With the amount and types of ads they've put through they've spent altogether 7 figures. The ads have not been as numerous in the last couple of years and less detailed until now. They talk about Pynchon and Joyce occasionally too, that's interesting.

The smaller boards have that quality. I used to lurk /jp/ several years ago and discovered they had a userbase that openly despised the rest of 4chan, and not like just /b/ or /v/, but almost every other board. They were actively hostile to greentexting, reaction images, every in joke popular on other boards, really. They also had a large knowledgebase of old 4chan culture that was lost very early on. I learned a lot about this place from them.

The context makes fairly obvious that it's a humorous (though in poor taste) footnote in a mathematical article.

Specifically, a woman mathematician Lara Pudwell wrote a short article on number theory, specifically how digits of a given number can be reversed (by multiplication, say). This is a topic jokingly mentioned in passing by Hardy as an un-serious, not properly mathematical problem, and yet the idea attracted some slight curiosity in Mathematical Monthly articles around the 60's and 70's, exchanges that Kaczynski participated in by producing his own note on the same topic while he was an active, professional mathematician. The basic context is explained fairly well in the opening language of Pudwell's paper, not seen in the humorous detail:

https://arxiv.org/pdf/math/0511366v1.pdf

Notice that the footnote has been changed slightly: "MOSTLY known for other work." Presumably she caught some flak for the bad joke and thought to amend it (but not delete it!)

It should be said that this topic was not part of Kaczynski's "serious" mathematical work on boundary functions, a topic having to do with complex analysis and topology about which I am unable to comment intelligently in much more detail. It (the piece Pudwell is citing here) was just a thing he published on the side, slumming as it were, padding his paper count.

t. somewhat knowledgable about Kaczynski's mathematical work and the history of its citation in the literature though not the mathematics itself
