The aesthetic of toothgritting grim determination in the face of utter hopelessness, which only a few people can tolerate, hence Buddhism re-added optimism and mythological elements with Mahayana.

Theravada is the most hardass, grim, and terrible religion out there. It's for pessimistic nihilists who think even pessimistic nihilism isn't grim enough.

It is a revolution in the world of religions. Buddha created a religion without God. For the first time God is no longer at the center of a religion. Man becomes the center of religion, and man's innermost being becomes godliness, for which you have not to go anywhere - you have simply stopped going outside. Remain for a few moments within, slowly, slowly settling at your center. The day you are settled at the center, the explosion happens.

So my message is: understand Gautam Buddha, but don't be a Buddhist. Do not follow. Let the understanding be absorbed by your intelligence, but let it become yours. The moment it becomes yours, it starts transforming you. Until then it has remained Gautam Buddha's, and there is twenty-five centuries distance. You can go on repeating Buddha's words - they are beautiful, but they will not help you to attain what you are after.

Those terms as you are using them did not come into existence until well after their contained ideas. To better understand this you should simply read the texts. Debates, real or invented, are recorded throughout the Pali texts of the Buddha or his followers debating rivals from other Indian philosophical traditions which in context were not separable from religion. Primarilythe buddha's discourses distinguished themselves against the brahmin-centric Vedic ritualism and their metaphysics, and the more extreme asceticism of the Jains within its earliest source materials.

The evolution from rival schools of thought into separate religions is a much longer process and like elsewhere, in India it was accelerated by the state/sovereign patronizing the religion. The Indian emperor Ashoka sent missionaries to the Hellenstic kings of the former Macedonian empire (he himself being the grandson of Chandragupta and a Seleucid princess). At this point qualitatively we can say Buddhism has ceased to be a variety of pre-Hinduism, and this is confirmed when anti-Buddhist dynasts succeed the Mauryans.

Traditional Christianity is far worse, with massa damnata and all that. In Christianity God literally sends most humans into an infinitely worse life than this one for being born in the wrong geographical location, and you have to agree with him.

Doesnt this apply to buddhism too? A saint will still reincarnate, despite loving god and all creatures, repenting of his bad deeds, achieving ecstasis, etc. Also, there are many christian texts that touch on this question about virtuous pagans.

The fact that you're even discussing a God who has given you some capacities from outside yourself is the difference. The nonduality inherent in Buddhism is surely heretical in Christianity..?

No, there's an autistic sperg on here that's obsessed with Shankara despite not having read any of his works. Shankara's entire philosophy is essentially trying to justify the Hindu claim that Siddhartha Gautama was an avatar of Vishnu, therefore Buddhism is null and void. The tl;dr is that he takes Nagarjuna's works that say that there is no Self (note the big S), but there really is, bro. The central argument is "The Buddha said X, quite clearly and repeatedly, but he REALLY meant not-X", which is so laughable it doesn't even warrant a response.

>>15372877
They're two completely different things. The point of Hinduism is to achieve Moksha, which is union with the divine. The point of Buddhism is to achieve Nirvana, which is stepping aside from the wheel of karma. While at a very basic tier they may be similar in that they're just "good end", the obvious question of "why do anything if X thing that is better than Y thing if to an uneducated layman they're sorta kinda the same?" arises.

The simplest reason is "Because the Buddha and some people after him think the Hindu and Abrahamic conceptions of the world are wrong and view the Buddha's diagnostics and treatments as being better".

Show me where the Buddha denies the Self. Show me how the Buddha came up with the exact same ideas contained in pre-buddhist Upanishads without being influenced by them.
