His work deals with probability. How should we treat 'ruinious' events, mathematically? What are the statistical consequences of "fat tailed" distributions? What are the real world impacts of these extreme distributions and events?
He thinks he's the sexiest man in risk management since George Costanza.

His basic thing is applied epistemology. He's a mathematical but practical-minded guy (worked in finance for years before earning big bucks and settled to write), hates scientism and most modern intellectuals that he recognizes as "charlatans". He has a thing for the ancients, especially the Romans. Not particularly religious, but recognizes religion's importance as coding some kind of ancient wisdom. Some philosophers he likes are Hume and Popper, he dislikes Hegel and metaphysical bullshit in general. His political outlook is mostly anti-globalization but not for the usual reasons. His ideas can be applied with an individualistic or collectivist outlook and his ethics are in the main utilitarian.

The importance of pop academics is that they are able to transpose ideas out of their academic niche into the minds of civil society's major stakeholders. I am a western civil servant and what I see is that guys like taleb are impactful because lazy bureaucrats dont want to spend the time and energy to get up to speed with some intense academic debate, but they do read guys like Taleb.

Of course only digesting the pop academics also comes with its set of flaws
