Trans people hate themselves. That's all there is to it. They have been so traumatized they've developed another version of themselves. A sort of "divine feminine" alter ego that will comfort them through the pain of being who they are.

Once someone opens of being "trans" as an potential path for them in life it's all downhill. They will want to get even closer to this female version of themselves - eventually fully embodying them. Because there they are safe. There they feel comforted.

Of course as soon as we take the blinders off what do we see? Deformation. Mutilation. Delusion. They are not happy. They are not having a good time with life. And they do not look like that woman in their head. They know who they are. Men.

That crying little boy is still in there somewhere, only now much, much farther away.

If you really must read something about it, then look for articles written by psychiatrists. Any transgender diary type of text is going to be a manifesto in some way, and hence unreliable. Any actual litterature about it is going to muddy, because the topic is too new.

On a personal, I've only met one, and it was a disturbed teenager girl: self-hating, self-mutilating, probably molested in her youth, antisocial as well, who went from a punk look to kawai one to scheduling a sexchange operation in what seemed to me as a desperate attempt at miraculously fixing problems that mostly pertained to her wounded self-esteem. I hope she's alright.

It was present but rarely there's a glimpse on what the average roman citizen thought on the matter.

In fact some Roman historians (Tacitus, Suetonious) seem to describe these practices as depraved while voicing their disapproval.
Then there's also example of Polybius describing homosexuality as a offense punishable by death if caught in his description of the military system. Something about that practice is also said in Caesar's own writings iirc

I can see the argument, but consider another perspective:
When you think about it, being a top is the most gayest thing you can do. You can put your dick into anything, man, woman, farm animal, inanimate object. The choices of things are as many as the choices of things that have holes in them or into which holes can be made. Thus the top is purely and fully fucking things they are sexually attracted to.
Bottoms on the other hand, are in it for the novel experience. They might not even like the form of men, but simply need convenient dicks! They could be imagining anything while being fucked, including fucking girls! Thus bottoming is less gay on average.
