1984 and Animal Farm seem to be the only contact a large portion of the population has with 'serious' literature. Why is this? They don't have very much in the way of literary merit, and their political relevance isn't particularly great either these days. There are many books out there which are both more accessible and more rewarding than these two. Is it because the average person thinks serious literature must make an explicit point about a subject which is perceived as important? Could this also explain the popularity of figures like Dostoyevsky among the general public?

Orwell is famous because of the lasting influence of 1984, Big Brother is synonymous with totalitarian and surveillance states. It's a more enduring legacy than that of most authors, regardless of skill or quality.
