You can read the book about the war written by a guy who was there and saw everything.
Vargas Llosa will say he is hated in Brazil because he wrote about their history, but the problem is how and why he wrote about their history. While, in the work of da Cunha, you see an aristocrat facing the reality and changing what his beliefs; in the work of Vargas Llosa, you see a man using a historical event to push his beliefs on the reader.
The first 100 pages are about geological and geographic autism and this tends to filter most people, but after it you'll find the definitive work of Brazilian literature.

thank you very much lad, I've been looking to get into more Brazilian writers after reading de Asiss' Memoirs of Braz Cubas and it becoming my favourite book

I thought it was really good (so is 'The feast of the Goat' by the same author), and I would read both that book and the one by Euclides da Cunha if you find that part of brazilian history interesting.

Maybe I didn't get it because I haven't read any of Vargas Llosa's other books, but I just finished War at the End of the World and couldn't figure out exactly what the author's beliefs were.

At the very least its a really fun read. It sticks very closely to the actual events of the book and still manages to be highly magical realist by dint of the already fascinating nature of said events. As an anarchist its representation of anarchism triggers me, but I still loved the book. I think you can blow through it pretty quick despite its relative size. Would recommend. The folio society edition is great too.

If you have time, you can check Vargas Llosa's articles on El Pais and compare to his works. Basically, he criticizes every type of revolt (violent, like the war of Canudos, or pacific, like the protests in Barcelona).
What was your impression of Antonio Conselheiro in The War of the End of the World? I will make a bet here and risk looking like a retard to say you see him as a Rasputin-type mixed with a crazy man who saw himself as the envoy of God and is, in part, to blame for the conflict.
