I know nothing about this book, but I detest this with all my heart. This artwork makes it seem like a Rick and Morty fanfiction. Everyone who has this book on their bookshelf is pretty annoying. Hitchhiker's Guide to the Galaxy looks so bad it looks so disgusting I might throw up.

That's one among my different covers designed for that book. To be honest, I've never seen that one.

>"According to Douglas, the little green blobby planet thing (nickamed
the "Cosmic Cutie") has been struck the final blow, and will not be
featured on any of the new (American) HHG books. Here's what Adams
had to say:"I HATE the little green blob and have spent years locked in arguments
with my publishers with me trying to get rid of the obscene little thing. I've finally secured its demise with the new Ballantine editons of the soft
cover backlist."

Non-American readers are perhaps unaware of this book adornment, as it
was only the American publishing houses that determined that without a
consistent motif, all of us Yanks would become hopelessly confused by a
series of books with different names. Ahh well. Farewell, green thing."

At least he was aware that it looked retarded. I read the Turkish version, which has a better cover I guess.

I quite like this cover.
I agree that it has amassed this terrible reddit-like following, and so I've come to view it as pretty cringe too, but the book itself isn't terrible for what it is: which is a light, quick read, and isn't bad if you're just getting into reading. Nothing more though. (And I've heard the other books are shit, while the original radio play was better.)

Can't imagine coming to it as an American 20something in 2020. Discovered it at the end of primary school in the mid-90s, loved it, will always have a soft spot for it. Especially the original radio show and TV show. Fanbase is awful, like any fanbase.

>It's a great book that manages to satire more-or-less all science fiction from the era (the 1980s and before) and a lot of bullshit to do with general life at the time as well.
That's probably the biggest problem with the books nowadays, that they are 40 years old and much of it hasn't aged too well, due to the whole enviroment in which they were released having at least substantially changed or outright disappeared. For example the jokes on religion did back then really piss people off, but are nowadays only relatively boring atheist reddit humor.
